Trying to add video (mp4) to my timelinie STRICTLY for refrence but the audio does not play...

I've got an mp4 with animated storyboard / sound and I need to build up posing and lipsync on a layer above that. My problem is I can't get the sound to play. Please help!

Change your audio layer sync settings from Event to Stream in the properties panel.

Truns out restarting my computer did the trick, now the sound plays when previewing the timeline but I still can't sync the video's sound so I could "scrub" through and still hear the sound.

That's what setting audio to Stream is for. Give it a try.

for some reason the sound option is grayed out as if there was no sound i.e. I can't change my layer sync setting from event to stream...

Make sure you have the audio layer selected first.
