Audio split to left and right

Hi, I'm very new to Audtion, but learning. We have a podcast I am trying to edit. The audio when imported is split. One voice is on the left channel, one voice is on the right channel. It's not like this when you listen to the audio out file in QuickTime. But if you listen to it in Audtion, the tracks are split. Any help would be much appreciated.

Help with what, exactly? You have a stereo file that QT is, for some reason, playing in mono and you open it in Audition and it plays correctly. What do you want to do next?

What I am looking to do is export the file to wave. But when I do this, I only get the audio split again between L and R.  So when each person talks, one goes to L, one talks on the R. Is there any way to merge the audio so it splits when they talk, it doesn't matter if its right or left you can hear them both?

Well, if I take what you've said literally, it's quite simple to do that, although if you are producing a podcast in stereo it may not actually be the best thing to do. Normally you'd have one voice panned a little way to one side, and the other voice similarly to the other side. Anyway, literally:

Open the file in Waveform view. Go to Effects>Amplitude and Compression>Channel Mixer. If you select the preset 'All channels 50%' and apply it, then both signals will appear in both tracks at equal levels.

Alternatively, if you want to try just narrowing the left-right signals so they're more central, then use Effects>Sterero Imagery>Stereo Expander and select the 'Narrow Field' preset initially. Now if you preview the effect using the play button on the effect itself,  you can vary the position of the lower fader until you get an acceptable result.
