Audition crashes when trying to open MP4

Whenever I try and import and MP4 file to open its audio track, the program freezes and eventually crashes if I try and click anywhere (Not Responding).

I need to be able to open the videos in order to create VTT subtitle files precisely.

Edit: apparently it freezes only when I try to directly open the video preview or the audio. If instead I just expand the video,  create a multitrack session and stick the audio in it it does not freeze. This is bizarre (check the attached image for reference).

I have already tried uninstalling Audition using the Adobe Cleaner Tool.
