I'm running a 48k job right now. I have a Mackie 1640i 96k playback device. At the bottom of Audition, on the left, while playing, it says ."Resampling to match your 96k device." When I have glitches I wonder if that's creating a problem. I wouldn't say it always causes glitches but I did have real crackling noise one time. My Windows Control Panel/Sound shows me my Mackie ins and outs and is set to 96k, though there is a dropdown box which allows me to change to 48 or 44.1 (and hoperfully back to 96k again).
Would it be better for Audition performance if I changed this from 96 to 48? Does anyone recognize this playback resampling message?
Thanks very much.

You'll get that message if you don't allow Audition to take control of your sound device. Does it matter? Probably not. It would be a lot worse if the OS was doing the resampling, after all... Will it cause glitches? Possibly, but I'd not expect crackling because of the resampling.
Generally it's best to run your sound device at the same rate that your files are running in Audition, even though that can be a bit of a pain having to switch if you're doing mixed work.
The occasional glitch in the sound seems to be one of those things we have to live with. I still get them very occasionally on a machine with an RME sound device, and with completely up-to-date drivers for everything. Personally I blame Microsoft.

By letting Audition take over, do you mean de-selecting the box that says 'Use machine defaults' on the Audio Hardware page? Should I do that? Agreed about the OS resampling.
So basically it's ok leaving it the way it is. I've been using Audition for almost 20 years and frankly can't remember noticing that message in various instances. I work at whatever resolution comes my way. But I recently had some computer issues and all of a sudden this message took on potential importance. But I'll leave it alone.
Thanks.
