When I upload audio files into Audition, the sound become distorted by crackling and pop sounds - both in waveform and multitrack? The original files are fine, I've listened to them externally from Audition, which makes me think it has to do with the editing software itself. I've recently upgraded to CC 12, but still same problem. And the software functioned fine during the earlier half of the year - this has only happened recently (in the past month or so). It doesn't effect the sound of the final podcast but it's frustrating to edit with. Has anyone experienced this before?

In Edit>Preferences>Audio Hardware there is, depending upon what driver you are using, the option to increase the latency - that's the option with MME and WASAPI, but if you're using an ASIO driver, then it's referred to as I/O buffer size - basically it's the same thing. Chances are that your system has been on the edge for a while - it doesn't take much of an additional load running in the background to tip it over into needing a bigger buffer. So initially, increase the numbers and see if that improves the situation.

doesn't give me options, it's fixed in 192

Then you have a unique copy of Audition - this is present in all of the others!
In terms of latency, you'd need to increase this number.

What audio interface are you using? Does it come with manufacturers ASIO drivers?

Have you tried clicking on the settings box for your US-144MKII? If you only have one option in the Audition box, it means that you have to set it in the device's own control panel, and this setting is transferred to Audition. So whilst it's not actually set by the pull-down, it is adjustable:
Whatever yours is set to, you need to make it one step higher.

SteveG, you are a Master. I changed the latency to low (actually reduced the number to 128, it was automatically set) and the crackle is gone. Thanks a lot

It's great to hear that your problem is solved, but reducing the input latency is most definitely NOT the usual method! In fact, reducing the latency is almost certain to increase the crackles, not remove them! It will be very interesting to hear whether the change you've made turns out to be a "permanent fix".

by the way, the crackle starts after the count (seems like everything is going well) , when the track is almost empty. When the music starts, so does the crackel

Hi everyone, I've managed to solve the problem by bumping up my buffer levels (from 16 to 24). That slight adjustment must have freed up some computing processing power - enough to sound clear while editing. Perfect for editing and I understand this doesn't effect the quality of audio. Thanks for your help!
