I'm trying to insert media into the multitrack editor but it goes offline consistently. I have 32GB of space on the drive where the session and media files are.
I've tried moving the session folder to another location on same drive but get the Error 16 message of death saying no room. This makes no sense.
I've moved the media to a partitioned drive with 200+GB of space but still no luck. AU seemingly randomly lets me insert this file when I exit out of Audition and come back in. I've also tried increasing the RAM allocated to Adobe to 13GB, but no luck.
I've been troubleshooting this for 5+ hours and am now losing it. Please help!!!

You haven't even told us whether this is on a Mac or a PC - nor what version of Audition you are using. Or whether any of this storage is even local - all this stuff makes a huge difference.

Thanks for prompt.
Windows 10. Session and media files are set to local; although I just started using StartSync on dropbox and am suspicious. Paused all dropbox activity and no differenct.
Version 13.0.7.38

This is what it looks like in timeline after dragging in media. The media is in same folder as session. Audition takes 30 sec to convert the file to session format, then goes offline. The media is available and editable in the wave editor.

Just got help via adobe chat and they fixed it.
The issue was with corrupted preferences and Media cache that they told me to delete in two Adobe folders on my PC.

Update part II. Since getting advanced Adobe chat support (they literally spent 3 hours controlling my PC to update drivers and roll back Audition) I am still getting incredibly wonky behavior out of Audition.
I am now rolled back to 12.1 on Windows 10.
There is a persistent inability for me to save files in Audition without creatively trying to hide them from other Audition folders/files. It's to the point that I've run out of work arounds.
...can't hide them in the partition (drive D:)
...can't hide them by using an admin user ID on Windows
...Plenty of space on my C: drive.
....can't hide them on desktop.
...not an issue with Dropbox SmartSync...had their tech on while I was on with Adobe tech and we confirmed it is not a cloud/file issue.
I get error 16 codes usually but what is happening now is I insert a wav into multrack and the track immediatedly goes offline. Linking to the location of the file doesn't work.
Rebooting Audtion doesn't work.
I don't think Adobe has a handle on the severity of the fatal errors in Audition that make it unusable.
Does anyone have any ideas? Clean install of Windows, perhaps? I'm at that point and willing to do something drastic since I've invested in learning Audition and I have project deadlines that I can't afford to spend days fixing software issues.
Does anyone know if Audition is known to run more smoothly on a different version of Windows? Or perhaps a Mac? I may even consider getting a new machine if that helps.
Thanks for any ideas. The advanced chat at Adobe are very helpful and quick but they just don't seem to be linking together these complaints at the developer level to deal with the issue.
