How can I get rid of this static sound (link to sample)?

I picked up this static from my mic, which gradually decreases throughout the clip. Unfortunately at the beginning, it's pretty bad so I'm looking for a way to reduce it.

I have tried capturing a noise print and tried Noise Reduction and Adaptive Noise Reduction without any success, which could be on me for not getting the settings right. I end up sounding like I'm talking in a revolving box.

Any other Audition settings I could try? Any other plugins that might be able to help?

Thanks in advance.

When it varies like that, I'm afraid that the only really effective treatments available involve some more specialist software. In this case, I'd recommend iZotope's RX (in whatever the current version is - 7 I think). If you really want to attempt to improve it in Audition, then the way to approach it is to select a high FFT setting in NR (process - not the adaptive sort) get a clean sample of the noise (which is at least relatively constant in terms of its frequency spread) and do several passes, only taking a few dB off at a time. Each time resample the noise and do it again. Also try a couple of different FFT sizes.

The reason for recommending RX is that it has a couple of other options for dealing with that sort of noise, and I suspect that one of them might do a better job of this with fewer passes. But that is the thing; even with really posh NR software, it invariably works better taken in small bites.
