How to record multitrack

Hello

I'd like to record various instruments simultaneously via an Alesis multimix 16 firewire into Audition CS5. But apparently it only records the right and left stereo channel and not the individual tracks. Where can I make the correct setup?

I'm afraid you're going to be out of luck with your desire to use that mixer for multitrack recording into Audition!  It's designed to pass ONLY a stereo output to the recording device (your computer with Audition.  BTW, I assume you actually mean Audition CS5.5, or should that be CS6?).

IF the mixer has Direct Outs on each input channel and IF you have a separate multichannel audio interface you might be able to feed from each direct out to a channel of the external interface, and hence into Audition, via USB or Firewire.

Actually, the discontinued Firewire version should be able to route individual channels into Audition.  The problem may be that, because it's discontinued, the driver won't work with newer operating systems.

However, assuming it'll still work, the first thing to do is go to the Edit/Preferences/Audio Hardware menu.  Make sure you have the Alesis drivers and device selected.

Then create a new Multitrack Session.  Click on the Input window in each track (it's marked with a right-facing arrow), select mono then (if you're lucky) you'll get a list of all the Multimix inputs.  Assign a different input to each track.  Once you're set up, I suggest saving your arrangement as a Session Template--it'll save a lot of track selecting next time.

Hello Bob

I've got it sussed out. Exactly how you described it. Alesis doesn't really support the mixer anymore, so with some help from their service team I got the driver. Since my OSX is 10.6.8 everything falls into  place now. I should be on the going from this point. But without help I wouldn't have found these little arrows in the first place and I probably would have assumed the error is within the mixer. Now it's all a matter of getting accustomed to the mixing desk and Audition (CS6) and I should be fine.

Happy to be of help...glad it worked.  I have an obsolete Firewire interface that stubbornly refuses to work with Windows 10.
