So, I've had this since I updated to CC Adobe Audition over multiple versions. I use Audition for waveform editing daily. And 5 to 10 ten times, when trying to play or zoom (typically, as I think to describe), I get the beach ball stopping progress... for maybe 10 seconds, then whatever commands I trigger seem to queue up... and then activate. I would guess I am making somewhere in the range of 50-100 waveform edits daily... And then sometimes it just sticks.
I upgraded my interface last year, but that didn't change anything. And I keep thinking a new version of Audition will fix it, but it remains with latest January 2017 update.
Is there a fix for this? Anyone else having this problem?
I am on OS 10.11.6 (and have upgraded thru a few versions of El Capitan). And I cannot recall if I had the problem with Mavericks in 2014 (when I started using Audition CC), but I don't think so. Perhaps I should mention I use Pro Tools, Ableton Live and other DAWs, but don't have this problem.
Thank you.

If this mainly happens when you hit the Play button after having done an edit it might be that the sample rate that you are working on in Audition isn't set the same as your audio interface. If this is the case Audition pauses whilst the sample rate of the audio entering the playback buffer is resampled to match that of the interface/Mac audio settings.
Delays when zooming can be down to graphics card driver problems when the screen has to be redrawn.

Thank you for the prompt reply!
I'm checking now and my sample rate seems to be synced with Audition. Also, it's not necessarily right before or after an edit. But I am working with 10+ minute 328 Kbps MP3 files... And doing quick turnaround edits. I do notice, that Audition seems to always open all MP3s as 32-bit floating, no matter how I save the file (for this workflow, I save at 44.1 kHz, 16-bit). But that's always been the case with Audition, I think.
I don't recall having the problem with Audition CS prior to CC, but that was on Windows.
As far as graphics card, I'm just using the standard card that came with the Mac mini (late 2012). And it's not created issues with any other apps.
And it's been seemingly happening for years every day! I have not noticed any common denominator that seems to trigger it. Except that I move fast -- select, zoom, edit (delete), zoom, listen, zoom, edit, undo, listen, select, edit, etc. -- in waveform view.
Most of the time no problem... But several times every morning... It stops, beachball, then resumes.
Also, sometimes (with about the same frequency, maybe less) the audio drops out for like 10 seconds or so. I can't stop the playback cursor from continuing, but I wait... then it will register my spacebar hit and stop.
This is over two different interfaces, same behavior.
Should I be posting a bug report? Thanks again for the help and advice.
I just clicked "attempt to force hardware to document sample rate"... Will see if I notice a difference.

"Delays when zooming can be down to graphics card driver problems when the screen has to be redrawn."
What does this mean? I have this beachball problem and it typically happens, as you say, after zooming in on an area with the mousewheel. I am on an iMac Pro so maybe there aren't drivers for my graphics card? I checked in settings and unlike PS or AI I don't see any graphics options.

Under Preferences there is a setting for Use Hardware Acceleration for Drawing. Try turning this on or off and see if it alters the zoom redraw.

Thanks for your reply. I am on a Mac and using Audition CC 2018. Is this checkbox supposed to be under Preferences->General? I do not see any option like this there.

That's where it is on a PC version of Audition. Perhaps the option isn't there on the Mac version.
