Multitrack session crashed on save; now links to resource files are gone

Engaged ,

Mastering an audiobook, and have several versions as I climbed the learning curve.  I wanted to be able to compare versions, side-by-side, so created a multitrack into which I inserted original, edited, and processed, as well as a track for fixes.  This was working beautifully -- choosing the best file, applying some minor Dynamics and evening out the levels -- having re-recorded bits at hand if needed, making great progress.  I saved every five minutes and clicked YES to copying media into the session folder.  all was well until I left it to save all and copy all files into the session folder.  This morning, the computer was frozen -- had to force quit.  When I re-opened the project, all the segmented layout is there, and Audition repopulated each clip, but when I went to resume editing, every file -- regardless of its position or label -- plays back the same file, chapter 3.

I have tried different versions of the back-up, all the same problem. I tried relinking all files, but it wants the wrong chapter, which seems very bizarre ("Please locate "03.  CH-03 MASTER Working_ML.wav for clip "014. CH14new.")  I tried picking the RIGHT clip for "014.  CH14new," but then it replaced all clips with THAT file.

I've searched in vain for a solution to this weird issue, no luck.  I saw one similar problem where the answer was to highlight all tracks, then right click and choose "offline," then drag each empty sequence to a new project, then relink from there -- but I cannot see how to "offline" the files other than as described above.

Here's a screen grab of the layout, with original sessions on top, and the most recent files at the bottom.    It LOOKS pretty, but if you click anywhere, it is all chapter three.

A copy of the session file is available here:

Can I restore mu multitrack layout with the CORRECT links??

Thanks!

First of all have you checked to see if Audition has actually saved copies of all the required files into the session folder?

I notice looking at all the .sesx files that you post the only file that is listed as in use in the sessions is "/Volumes/UF-MEDIA-006/BALEFIRE/BALEFIRE MASTER -- VERSIONS/003. BALEFIRE CHAPTER 03/PREVIOUS VERSIONS/03. CH-03-Master-WORKING_ML.wav" So that will be the only one Audition expects to be needed to open for those sessions. Do you have any earlier versions of the .sesx files still?

P.S. You are using a somewhat old version of Audition CC 2018. We are now on CC 2019 v.12.01.34. So it would be a good idea at some stage to update to the latest version. The Adobe Creative Cloud desktop app should have kept you abreast of the current version.

Hi Ry

Thanks very much.  Actually, I am using the current 12.0.1.34 version -- I just forgot to update my boilerplate text.

I have checked the session file, and yes, it is loaded with many files, including (I hope) the most current, although adding to the craziness, my Mac managed to update BOTH the Created on and Modified on dates to yesterday -- so I do not have the option of sifting through those to find the latest.  I know the iMac is underpowered and short on memory; unfortunately, it is the one model that is not upgradable.  I did try opening this project on our other, newer iMac with 16gb of RAM, but it needed some files from my hard drive to make sense of the project apparently, so I have gone back to the slow, old one.

I am curious about this:

I notice looking at all the .sesx files that you post the only file that is listed as in use in the sessions is "/Volumes/UF-MEDIA-006/BALEFIRE/BALEFIRE MASTER -- VERSIONS/003. BALEFIRE CHAPTER 03/PREVIOUS VERSIONS/03. CH-03-Master-WORKING_ML.wav" So that will be the only one Audition expects to be needed to open for those sessions. Do you have any earlier versions of the .sesx files still?

That may be the problem.  I think that this is the earliest .sesx file. I'm not too adept at reading these under-the-hood files but will check. Still, even the earliest should have had at least 52 files referenced, and I was working with it for several days, saving all the while, before this crash happened.

Madness.  Thanks for indulging me.  As always, your help is greatly appreciated.

Rob

I am tracking back in problems experienced earlier, (this is a LONG learning curve), and found this from Suite Spot :

If I can offer you any advice it will be to always backup to several places - just in case

If you ever get an issue where you can't relink the media you can always open your sesx session file in a text editor (not a word processor) (make sure you make a backup of the sesx file first) and scroll to the bottom where you will see where Audition thinks the files are.

Bear in mind that Audition will try and find the files via the absolute path first and then via the relative path so keep in mind that if you just up and make a copy of the session including media and then open the session Audition will be referencing the media in the original location (assuming it is still there) and NOT the copy.

I am incorporating that advice too.  Stay tuned.

You can see from the backup .sesx file names that they do actually correspond to the Created and Modified dates and times. The number in the file name reads from left to right Year,Month,Day,T,Time of day.

Going back to my comment about the single Chapter 3 file name, this was gleaned from reading the end of your posted .sesx files. And, unfortunately, it was the only audio file referenced in them in the bottom position as suggested by Suite Spot when I opened them with Firefox as my reader. Reading one of the earlier sessions might show the correct audio file list and their Audition IDs.

Suite Spot is our .sesx guru so he can untangle what goes on inside the session files. So with any luck he may come along and join in the discussion. In the meantime I would go back to some of your earlier sessions from 27/28th March to see if any of those still reference all the required audio files. If one of those does it may be possible to rebuild a new working session from one of those and one of the latest provided the track layout has remained the same since those earlier versions. But I can't promise anything.

Interesting.

I have followed the trail of advice above and I am examining earlier versions of the .sesx file and making some progress.  The earliest  DOES have all of the files needed for the top track.  It wants them copied into the session folder, so I am doing that now.  I am pretty sure I did that all along, but just to be sure...  Nope. Same problem, even when the files panel SEEMS to have loaded all required.

I suspect there was a chain reaction when Audition crashed while trying to save.  There has been some slowdown and beachballing, so I have just spent over an hour with Apple and they cleaned out some malware, and I updated to the latest OS Version.  The computer runs much faster, and I am praying that Audition will now operate successfully.  Going to the gym and will attempt in a few hours, and check back here.

Thanks!

Sorry, been on a short tour doing production for a show so I missed this one.

If the problem is still happening then can you send me the sesx referred to in your last post please?
