Sound quality changing when program is closed

I have an intermittent problem where my audition will be recording audio fine - no background noise and clear audio. The audio wave will look like the picture below. You can see in the quiet parts there's no interference.

Then I'll close the program and come back to it later and when i try to record again it's suddenly picking up background noise and the audio will sound tinny and distant. The audio wave looks like the picture below here.

The problem just pops up out of nowhere and it won't go away until i turn the computer off and leave it for a few days. I know that sounds ridiculous but it's the only thing that makes it stop. It's a seemingly random problem.

I'm recording through a Neewer W-700 michrophone and a behringer UMC22.

Are you recording onto a laptop or desktop PC or Mac? If you are using a laptop and the recorded sounds go distant and tinny it usually means that the computer has forgotten your external USB audio interface and is recording from the built in microphone instead.

desktop pc. it's not so distant as such as it lacks the bass and "full sound" that the other one has. it definitely the same microphone recording since If I turn the preamp off and on then it records nothing.
