Using time and pitch even to speed up a piece by 1 second, the audio becomes machine like and loses the original sound. At work, it does not.  Is there a fix?

Make sure that your stretch settings are 'Rendered (high quality)' for best results

Depending on the audio you may want to select 'Varispeed', 'Monophonic' or 'Polyphonic'.
Precision should be 'high' and you may or may not need to select 'preserve formants'
These are a few things you may need to consider for the results that suit you
