Audition CS5.5 /Win 10

I'm ripping more vinyl. But now with Audition, since the Cooledit 2000, finally, couldn't keep up.

AUD is setup by default. I don't recall making any specific changes during installation.

44100 Recordings come through intelligibly but have a "in a can" sound.

The hardware is Creative SB, mic-in patch line from a vintage sony receiver. Music Hall into phono jack of Sony. the example attached is MontyPython.

I'm at a: "is it software/setting or hardware" level of questioning. Anybody have any experience with this? Or what you call that tinny quality?:)  The sample is spoken with machine gun patter in the distant backgroud (its not an artifact). The quality of the voices -- like they're too close to the mic.  Thanks all.

It doesn't really sound 'tinny' as such, but it doesn't sound good. What's causing it? Hard to say definitively - there are far too many variables here, but I'll tell you what I think: For a start, you haven't said which Music Hall TT - they vary quite a lot. The bit that worries me slightly is 'mic-in patch line from a vintage Sony receiver'. If you take what is a typical output from an old reciever and feed it into a mic input, then unless you are very careful, you will end up with both overload and noise problems. Any output from an old reciever is going to be at more or less line level, not mic level, so far higher signal level than the input can cope with without an attenuator in the line. But then you've fed the signal into an extra (and therefore noise-adding) stage. Not good. What's just as bad is that you've fed it into a Creative Lies SB - a card we have disliked for decades, and that really doesn't work that well anyway.

My advice would be to get a new sound device with a line input, or better yet, a phono input. These days there are loads of USB ones available that will comfortably out-perform a SB without breaking a sweat. Numark make a cheap one, but there are loads more available. Just do a google search using the term 'sound device with phono input' and you'll find them easily.

It's also worth checking the TT setup, and looking critically at the cartridge/stylus. If that part of it isn't performing to spec, then nothing you feed it into afterwards can fix that at all. Bottom line; check out the whole system, because this could easily be a combination of a number of issues.

Well, thank you SteveG.  Your comments were not unsurprising.  So I'm kind of back to square one.

The TT is a MH mmf5.1, the patch line from the receiver goes into the C-SB's "Line In/Mic-In" port.  I'm not qualified to comment on that functional/combination - but may well be the culprit you mentioned.   I got that board for an unrelated reason (it has a What-U-Hear) option for source.

What I'd hoped over the last few years was to bypass the "vintage receiver" and get to a:   TT -> Pre-A -> desktop/board/app setup.

I'm happy to change boards.  but "sound boards with phono" seems to only bring up external devices.  Numark seems heavy on mixing and DJ - overkill in my effort.   The Pro-Ject Phono Box MM DC Preamp seems well regarded and has the basic function required,  but It seems I still need another device in the daisy chain. Unless I can reduce the RCA to a usb or 3.5  No?

I assume(d) that with all the tech advances of this century that that hardware lineup is do-able now, even ez.  Perhaps not.  Thanks again, and to anyone who'd like to chime in.
