Maybe resetting preferences might cure problems. Close Bridge, hold down Command-Option-Shift (PC: Control-Alt-Shift) and then launch Bridge again. A dialog will appear asking what you want to do. Turn on the Reset Preferences checkbox and click OK. Now when Bridge appears, the preferences are factory-fresh.

I restarted my computer, and then i noticed the destination folder was changed to "copy to other folder", which i never had used, and the destination wasn't selected yet, and that was the reason for the rename button to not be selectable. Once i changed to "rename in same folder", the option that i always use, the button became active. So it wasn't a problem with bridge, it was a case of not paying attention to a box that i normally don't use.

But Thanks anyway!

I am having the same problem as the original post - after selecting the files and clicking rename Bridge does nothing.  I've reset the preferences - still the same.  Any other ideas?

See if the destination folder changed to "copy to other folder" vs. "rename in same folder" (response 2. above). That worked for me once I switched to rename in same folder.

I noticed this too, and I was able to change to "rename in same folder" .  However, as I moved on through my files, now only "copy to other folder" is my option.  It won't let me click on "rename in same folder".  Its acting very weird this morning.

I had the same problem with files I copied from a CD.  I think it's a folder permission issue.  If any of the folders and/or files don't have write access, you can only rename to a new folder.  If you haven't chosen a new location, the rename button won't work.  If you don't have the option to rename in the same location, it's probably a locked folder or you don't have read/write permission.  Hope this helps.

Same Problem. (Mac) Uninstalled bridge and reinstalled, Reset Preferences, "Copy to new folder" works sometimes, most times bridge freezes up and I get a colorful spinning wheel, I have read/write permissions for files and the folder they're in. Just a little frustrating for a program that works great otherwise.
