Seems that bridge re-indexes smart collections when you click on them!

Why do these collections not stay indexed?

Anyone?

The whole point of a smart collection is  that it's always up to date: so it has to look if there are any new images that meet the specified criteria (or remove any that are no longer present).

Thanks, Ronald I'm aware of that, however previously indexed files that have not moved their thumbnail previews seem to "re-generate" when visiting the folder.

Sorry but no this is not the correct answer.  If the files are indexed, why does it have to redo the whole thing all over again every time you open the collections.  It should simply search the new files created (un-indexed) to find new matches and not have to search what is previously indexed.  That is the meaning of "indexing."

Wrong answer!

The index doesn't update in real time. So it has to be verified. If files have been moved or deleted, the index would be out of date. So, yes, Bridge has to reindex files.

So if I change one file out of 100K, it then needs to "re-index" all 100K files again.  Is that it?

You can't "change one file out of 100K."

A Smart Collection is NOT a list of files. Its a saved search. When you click on it, Bridge runs that search so the results are up to date.

Your words:  If files have been moved or deleted...

New Question:  So if I move or delete one file out of 100K, it then needs to "re-index" all 99.9K files again.  Is that it?

Edit:

One does not even need to delete or move a file to trigger a re-index.

Scenario:

1. Open Bridge.

2.  Click on a smart collection.  It opens the files in the collection as it starts to index all the files in the folder specifien the search criteria.  Takes a long time to go thru all the files as there are quite a few.  Finishes and gives a final file count that met the search criteria.  Great.

3.  Make no changes whatsoever.  Just close Bridge.

4.  Open Bridge.

5.  Same re-indexing repeats all over again.

If this is normal,  then it is a flaw.

I don't think you understand how a Smart Collection works.

The ONLY thing saved is the search criteria. No file information is saved.

When you go to a Smart Collection, Bridge runs that search. EVERY time. Just like running a manual search.

There is no "re-indexing" of the collection. There is no collection. Just a search.

When you create the smart collection, or perform any search, you have the option to "include non-indexed files." This comes with a warning, "This may be slow," and this is no joke. If you deselect this, you will not see any indexing at all, the first time or any other time. This will work fine, as long as all your files are all indexed at the time the search is done. If they're not, then just do any search with the indexing option selected.
