FILE FOLDER NAMES SHOWING IN CODE

I have an unusuak probelem.

We use Bridge on two computers:

1 Windows and 1 Mac. They both access files on a networked drive.

Sometimes the MAC will create a file folder and on the MIC its ist perfectly legible, but on the Windows PC it is not.

IE:

MAC Made a file in Bridge  Titled: Graham Lopez

It will show correctly in all programs, as well as in Bridge.

BUT..On the windows machine (all brograms and Bridge)  it shows as: GFK4CH~5

This happens about 80% of the time with the Bridge created file folders on the Mac. We then need to use the WINDOWS machine to rename them correctly. So as you can imagine, its a lot of double work.

Has anyone else experienced this and more imortant, do you have a solution?

The MAC is new running the lastes IOS and latest Bridge.

Thank you,

Paul

This is an issue on the networked drive. You are seeing the short filename (also known as 8.3.) Where is this networked drive- connected to a computer, an NAS appliance, etc?

Thank you.

Yes, we are using a NAS (1 year old Synology) but this problem never happened before. It only happens with this one MAC(intel unit new in Jan of this year) .. no other MACs on our system have this issue.  So do you have any idea how to correct this? Its not 100% of the timeits randomly.

Have you talked to Synology? They may have a firmware update or settings to change. Also, are you using Windows-legal filenames?

Yes we spoke to Synolgy and they have no clue as its a random/intemitent issue.

As a bit of info; When I go directly to the NAA via the nas interface/app, the files names are all correct. Its only on a Windows machine that they show in code and again, there is no pattern or reason that we can figure out. The names of the folder are all  John Doe--5'6.

Its not a code, its a Windows short name. Windows will do this, but it could be an interaction between the NAS and your Windows installation. The Mac has no involvement.

With all respect, this only happens when the Mac creates the file folder. When the windows machine crates the folder there is no issue. When the mac doe, sometimes they appear (not every time) in this "code" format and only apear this way to a windows machine. Not to the MAC machines.
