Star Rating not working

Hello All

Adobe Bridge CC 2017 running on Win10

I have been reviewing images and the Star Rating shortcuts have stopped working (ctr+1 thru ctrl+5). The labels still work (ctr+6 thru ctrl+9). I can place a start rating on an image from the menu bar, but that is a pain in the butt when reviewing hundreds of images. The ctrl+1 shortcut was working up until a week or so ago. Any ideas on whats wrong? There may have been a "fat finger" along the way but I sure could not e4xpand on that.

Is there a simple way to get this working again?

Thank you

John Munro

Hi Labjohn,

You can try purging the cache by doing the following:

  • Choose Edit > Preferences (Windows) or Bridge > Preferences (Mac OS).
  • Select the Cache panel.
  • Click Purge Cache.

Sahil

Hi Siddarth,

I checked to make sure the images weren't locked via the Get Info command (Mac), and checked everything I could find in Bridge's file menus to see if I could find the problem, and found nothing. I had already started the selection process a day prior; the star ratings disappeared, but the assigned labels still showed. I went into preferences and looked through the metadata and other preferences to see if I could find a solution there, still nothing. When I open the File Info to review the copyright metadata that I had assigned prior, special characters (apostrophes, and the copyright "c") show as a black triangle with a question mark. I got an error if I modified the metadata at all, so no changes could be made.

So here is what I know: There was no file corruption during transfer, as the metadata and rating commands worked fine the day before. There is no apparent lock on any of the image files (either in Bridge or Mac "Get Info"). The problem still persists today and only with these files, all file commands work fine on newly imported images today. The problem is metadata related.

My workaround was to copy the images into the client's folder, open and re-save as PSD files, and can now continue with star/label ratings to finish the selection process. Murphy's law: "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong"

Thanks,

~Troy

Star ratings are not working in Adobe Bridge 9.0.1, 2018. I've done all the purges and restart safe routines, nothing helps. I'm dead in the water with several hundred images to rate and I can't. Bridge 8.1 worked OK most of the time but it was flaky as well. Nothing like this. I can't un-rate an image and many images just sit there with no apparent action at all.

Hi chaynes4_me_com,

Please try to reset the preferences by holding ctrl+click on Bridge Icon for windows and opt+click for iMac.

1. Try to change the rating via Label -> Rating menu

or

2. Try to use ctrl+(1 to 5 ) for windows and cmd+(1 to 5 ) for iMac.

or

3. Open preferences (ctrl+k or cmd+k) go to Labels uncheck require control keys to Apply Rating and Labels.

Click ok and then try rating them using numbers (1 to 5).

If none of these options works for you please ensure that files are not locked and Adobe Bridge have the proper permission to the file.

Also please share more info like

1. File format

2. Drive on which files are located (network, local or any external hard drive).

3. Operating system configuration.

Thanks,

Avinash

Greetings,

Thanks for the response.

I started by resetting the preferences in Bridge. I then went to the folders that house my photographic files and changed permissions on all to “read and write.”

Here is the way the window looks. Some of the files are JPG some are PSD as you can see.

The blank ratings areas are not responding to Command (Number) whatever is checked in preferences.

Mac OS 10.14.1. iMac. Bridge 9.0.1

Thanks. C

I was having the same problem and found that by going to the 'View' and clicking 'Sort' then, changing it to by 'filename' , I was then able to choose a star rating.

Purging did not work for me. It hasn't been working for months. I'm a fashion art director who trolls through thousands of images weekly. Rating is an essential part of my job. Can someone please sort this mess the F out?

UDPATE:

Spent an hour on the phone to a BRIDGE specialist and got this working.

The issue for me had something to do with the CAMERA RAW PLUGIN. She screen shared with me, deleted the RAW plugin, then reinstalled it, then quite BRIDGE and reopened it, and it worked.

Good luck to all. Hope this helps.

I had the same problem and worked with it for a week. Finally got a support specialist from Adobe who took over my computer, clicked one button and wallah...problem solved! In Bridge, click the "filter" tab (NOT the star with the drop down menu that says "show 2 stars or more", etc) then click on the tiny downward pointing arrow with the 4 straight lines beside it. It's a tiny square at the end of your tabs. Make sure "ratings" is checked. Somehow mine got unchecked. It will work immediately. If I didn't explain very well where that little button is, it's at the end of the tabs, such as "filter", "collections", favorites", or "folders", etc. When you click on the "filter" tab, the little square will brighten up so you can click on it. It lists all the tabs so you can choose which ones you want to see. I had unchecked the "ratings" tab and it no longer worked on the little shortcut with the star on the other side of the screen.

Hi Val_in_GA, I don't doubt you are a genius but I'm clearly not! I have the same issue except I just can't see another 'filter' tab. Is it up near the what looks like a cocktail glass, top right? Pulling my hair out!!

Hi nhp66,

I'm not going to try to get directly into this thread, rather just a Mac tip: When you want to do a screen shot, press Shift-Command-4. After you press those keys you will see that your cursor has turned into a bulls-eye. You can then take your cursor (bulls-eye) and drag out a rectangle on the screen and everything within that rectangle will be saved onto the desktop as a screenshot. It will have a png suffix and can be attached to any email, forum message, or whatever you'd normally send to others. Note: if you do a Shift-Command-3, you will capture your entire screen. This is overkill and most of the time not a good idea.

Enjoy!

Adding this, which may work for some. It may at least be an improvement on Adobe "customer service", which gets worse every year, as it is now incumbent upon users to provide needed technical help.

Clear cache. Make sure your folders have write permissions.

Switch to "Metadata" view tab in Bridge. Try changing a star rating. If it works, you can go back to your usual view (e.g., "Essentials").

Worked for me, YMMV.

[EDIT] -- Well, looks like in my case, I cannot have audio preview (auto) and star ratings at the same time. If I turn off auto-preview audio files, then star ratings work, and vice-versa. In either case, Bridge is pretty much useless.

Hello All

I just updated to the latest Bridge CC2020 10.10.163 and the Star Rating stopped working for me.

Come to find out, it was working on all images except the last shot on the SD card. (I always view my images from the newest to oldest.)  Anyway, as I was reading the replies above, I right-clicked on the image thumbnail, went to the fly-out menu, and sure enough that image was locked. I'm not sure how that happened (unless somehow it was locked on my camera) but when I selected "Unlock" on that fly-out, all was well. Ratings worked via mouse or keyboard shortcut.

I hope that helps someone.

Hi, i've been using Bridge CS6 till now and tried Bridge 2020 facing this same issue on OSX 10.13 (High Sierra).

The only way I could label and edit notes again is by changing OSX security preferences.

Go to System Preferences > Security > Confidentiality tab > Accessibility > Clic the plus sign (+) and add Bridge in the application list.

Close Sys. Pref. and Restart Bridge (it worked for me). On more recent system (Big Sur etc.) I guess you simply add the authorization at a different level (authorise to write on disk or equivalent). Cheers

I experienced this issue after just updating the suite of Adobe products.

The solution for me was to open an image in Camera RAW in Photoshop, ignoring and dismissing the pop-up that explains the latest features and then opening the image, still within Photoshop. Followed by closing the image, and Photoshop if you wish. Saving was not necessary.

It seems that the rating system in Bridge is linked to Camera RAW. Thus, the software won't function correctly in Bridge unless Camera RAW is opened and closed from within Photoshop at least once.

Hope this helps someone

Just spent over an hour with tech support getting this escalated and referring to this (and similar) threads.

For me - I can always rate with mouse. With keyboard, it's extremely intermittent - doesn't work about 80% of the time. Most often it works immediately after I've rated with mouse I'll usually be able to change rating with keyboard shortcuts. Tech support guy was unable to help but said they've fully escalated it for investigation. I'm working with video files, not photos. I don't think I've had this issue as much, if at all, with photos.
