P: Enhance Details causes cut out colored squares

I was trying out the new Enhance Details function on Lightroom 8.2, and it is working well on some images, but on other images, it creates the new file, but totally messes it up by cutting out a square in one part of the image, and then other green, blue and magenta squares of the same size are placed randomly in other parts of the image.

This doesn't happen on all files (and it isn't consistent as to which files...two shots taken minutes apart with the same camera and lens, and one it won't process correctly, but the other it will.  If it messes up on a file, it always messes up in the same way if you try again. It doesn't matter whether GPU processing is enabled or not.

Enhanced Detail will range for doing absolutely nothing visually to producing in best case (according to internal Adobe testing with Siemens Star resolution charts) 30% increase of resolution (NOT increase of pixels!). There is of course a before and after preview and the ideal zoom ratio to examine whether it's worthwhile converting the data to a linear DNG. Bottom line is: YMMV.

As to the issue you reported, can you try with GPU Prefs off?

Both running Windows?
I wonder if this might be another display profile issue although it should be consistent one way or the other. Version 2 or 4 ICC display profile?

Not sure what the first part has to do with my issue...when it works, it's working very well, but obviously having large portions cut out of my files isn't exactly workable.

As noted, the issue is the same whether the Use Graphics Processor is checked or not.

Adding to the oddity, when opening the converted DNG in Photoshop directly, I still get the cut out square s and colored overlays, but they are in a different location than when viewed in Lightroom, or when round-tripped through Lightroom (viewed in LR and round-tripped through LR show them in the same spots...opening that same DNG in photoshop directly, opens CameraRAW and shows the squares in different locations.)

If I open the original RAW file in CameraRAW and do Enhance Details, I get squares in yet a different location, though when trying to complete the import on that one, I get a photoshop Program Error, and it won't open the enhanced version it just created.

I am not sure what version my display profile is.  How would I determine it?  Mine is a custom profile through i1 Profiler and the i1 DisplayPro colorimeter. But, as you can see by the file attached, it isn't just something that is displayed incorrectly on my computer,

It's a preference when building the profiles in that software. Doubt that's it but worth checking as V4 profiles and LR don't always get along.

I just tried enhanced details and LR writes coloured squares over the dng image.  I am running OSX 10.13.6 on a 2012 Mac Pro with 32 GB ram and a 3GB AMD Radeon HD 7950 graphics card.  Here is what the result looks like: RackMultipart2019021294106pe2j-f61eeea2-fc26-4942-8a16-65624b9089df-451749745.png

I can't replicate the issue on my Mac with this .cr2. I did see slight visual differences after conversion but I'm going to upload on my FTP for others to try converting. At least if you still get the same colored squares, we know it's not the type of raw but something on your system.

I uploaded your photo and LR processes the enhanced version with no color squares. My file was a Fujifilm .raf file. So, my system seems to be working but LR cannot process Fuji X-trans files....Any other suggestions?

I also have no issues with that .cr2 file.  As I mentioned in my original post, not every file seems to be affected, but it happens with about half of my Fujifilm .RAF files (which seems to be the common thread here).  I haven't seen it on my Sony .ARW files either.

It's a shame too, as the improvement in Fujifilm when it works properly is quite substantial.

Just updated LR to 8.2. I have the latest Win 10 Pro, ie all up to date. But LR8.2 says I need the latest Win version. 😞

Probably need to supply Adobe with one of the .RAF files that's doing this. Good to know it isn't happening on all raws (or my .CR2), which perhaps indicates it's the actual original and not something OS related.

I am getting the same result as David Kennedy on my system at work, which granted, is a rather old late 2009 27" iMac. I will try at home on a newer Mac Mini later today. GPU on or off makes no difference and I get the patchwork of colour squares on my Fujifilm X-Pro2, X-E2 and X-H1 files. I tried it on a few Nikon D750 files and no glitches there - it seems fine. For now here is the Lightroom System Info...

Seems it might be a problem confined to X-Trans files.

I tested with a Nikon .NEF file: the enhancement process worked fine.  Andrew Rodney tested with a Canon .CR2, also fine (see Andrew's earlier posts in this thread.)

I have seen these symptoms with my own Fuji X-Trans XT-1, XT-2, and XT-3 files, and with Adobe's XPro-1 sample file that was linked to in the weblog post by Sharad Mangalick ( https://theblog.adobe.com/enhance-details/).
