I want to edit DNG files in ACR but it appears that it is is not saving edits as I make them. It only saves edits when I hit 'Done' or 'Open'. This is bad news if ACR crashes which it has done several times today. To work around this I want to periodically save my edits. I have setup the 'Save Image' dialog File Naming to use the Document Name and nothing else (see attached). I would expect that ACR would then over write the original file (yes I _want_ ACR to do this). However ACR ignores my setup and persists in appending '_1', '_2' etc to my saves. Adobe support say this is what's supposed to happen but surely if I tell it not to add a suffix it shouldn't.
I have seen other posts on a similar subject that involve running renaming scripts but that seeems way to complex for function that Word/Excel does without thinking.
Is this a bug or have I missed something?

Not a bug. Open (render edits and open) or Done (save edits only) is how the product was designed and works since day one.
As for the crash:
Try resetting your ACR preferences, better?
Hold down the Command key and select Photoshop > Preferences > Camera Raw (macOS) or hold down the Ctrl key and select Edit > Preferences > Camera Raw (Windows).
Click Yes in the dialog that asks "Delete the Camera Raw Preferences?"

Hi thedigitaldog - thanks for the reply, so the Done/Open functionality is as it ever was, but what about the appended suffix when I've specifically told it not to? In this regard ACR does not seem to adopt other document editing paradigms where I can 'Save' my work and it updates the file I am working on (in this case just updating the edit data in the DNG). Is this append functionality also a feature and not a bug?
Thanks

Again all by design in terms of a suffix.
If you want Adobe to consider a change:

Hi - OK, guess I'm swimming up stream on this issue. Thanks for the info.

Hi
First all submit a request to have an AUTO-SAVE feature ( just like MS Office can do ) to autsave your time & effort invested in Adobe's unnecessarily proprietary paramentric adjustments at predefined time interval
Then try to use "snapshot" feature in ACR ( CTRL+SHIFT+S on Windows) - may be it is better (but no ideal of course )

Hi deejjjaaaa - thanks for the snapshot tip - I need to experiment more with it but my intitial tests suggest that it doesn't update the DNG file - at least the modification time doesn't change like it does with Done/Open.
Cheers

Right. Not a viable solution to your request.

OK, then use CTRL+S and put those DNGs to some temp directory (even to RAM disk) - if your ACR will crash then you can restore from the last one there and if ACR will not crash then OPEN or DONE will put all the final edits in the DNG that you were working with... at least that will address your problem somehow... and of course you can write & run some background script that will clean those temporary DNGs to keep space available as you work

Hi - yes, doing frequent saves and treating the resulting foo_<n>.dng files as snapshots seems the least intrusive way to go as long as I remember to clean them up. Thanks.

I've used ACR since before it's first release and many betas to this day: it has never crashed for me. Maybe I'm just lucky....
Let's dig into real world solutions, stopping the plugin from crashing!
As a start, again: Try resetting your ACR preferences, better?
Hold down the Command key and select Photoshop > Preferences > Camera Raw (macOS) or hold down the Ctrl key and select Edit > Preferences > Camera Raw (Windows).
Click Yes in the dialog that asks "Delete the Camera Raw Preferences?"

no wonder obvious bugs in ACR/LR slip to production 🙂

I take 100% responsibility for every Adobe bug on all platforms (even those I don't use).
But then, I don't hide behind an alias making snarky posts, and I actually try to help fellow Adobe users, unlike some posting here.

Hi - I'll certainly try resetting the preferences to reduce the chances of a crash. Thanks
