Need: edit image in CR and then have it open as smart object

When I create a mask in PS (ex: bright areas) and open it in Camera Raw 13.2, edit and and click OK, I want the mask to open as a smart object in PS. But it doesn't. How do I do this, please?

Try looking in Camera Raw workflow settings in preferences. There is a box to tick which enables images in Camera Raw to be opened as smart objects in Photoshop by default.

I have done that, but it didn't work.
