I've got an old laptop with Photoshop 8.0 on it.   It shows in Help->Presets that Camera is installed.  However it does not recognize or open my Canon Raw Files.

What's wrong?  Thank you in Advance.

Is the Photoshop CS (ps ver 8) or Photoshop Elements 8?

What operating system are you using?

What model Canon camera do you have?

With either it's more than likely your camera is too new for those older applications to read the Camera Raw files.

Depending on your operating system you may be able to use the Adobe DNG Converter to convert your Canon files to DNG copies which then your Photoshop can open.

You can use the table in the link below to look up your Canon camera model, and that will tell you what version of the Camera Raw plug-in (not Photoshop) is required to open the version of Canon raw files that your camera creates.

Cameras supported by Camera Raw - Adobe help article

For example, I have a Sony A7C, and the table says its raw files can be opened by Camera Raw 13.1 or later. The current version is Camera Raw 17.

The catch is that a specific version of Camera Raw works only with a specific version of Photoshop, so it is possible that for full support of your Canon files you may need a newer version of Photoshop than you have now, just to run the version of Camera Raw that you need. Or, as Jeff already said, you can convert the Canon raw files to DNG using DNG Converter (which is free) because DNG files should work in older versions of Camera Raw. But it can be a hassle to have to convert every raw file you shoot; if you don’t want to go through that then you will want to upgrade your copy of Photoshop.
