I have been having an issue when opening Camera Raw in Photoshop. I'll open it and it freezes about 7 out 10 times I use it. I've left it alone for about 30 minutes one time but nothing. I've had to force quit every single time. (Attached is what I see everytime it freezes.). I've gotten to where I save my project everytime I try to open because if I don't, it doesn't recover when photoshop restarts after I force quit. I have had the issue where my computer shut off all of the sudden after clicking Camera Raw but that only happened once.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled photoshop to try and trouble shoot this problem but other than losing all my presets and settings, nothing of consequence happened. It still freezes.

Try disabling or altering GPU settings.
Also, can't hurt to reset Photoshop preferences:
Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift (Windows) or Option+Command+Shift (Mac OS) immediately after launching Photoshop. You will be prompted to delete the current settings.
(Mac OS only) Open the Preferences folder in the Library folder, and drag the Adobe Photoshop CS Settings folder to the Trash.
This action only affects the items found in the preferences dialog box. Numerous program settings are stored in the Adobe Photoshop Preferences file, including general display options, file-saving options, performance options, cursor options, transparency options, type options, and options for plug‑ins and scratch disks. Brushes (and lots of other setting) are not affected by the above instructions for deleting preferences. You may wish to make a screen capture of the settings in the Preferences dialog to reset them prior to deleting of this file.

I have the same issue on iMac. Folowed your suggestion thedigitaldog but the problem remains. I need to hard reboot my iMac every time it freezes, it appears to happen when I use the sharpening tool in Camera Raw. OS is Catalina.
