Another Newbie Question - Failure Captions Not Working with Click Box

Community Beginner ,
Apr 04, 2017 Apr 04, 2017

Hi!  I'm still learning, and I have yet another question about feedback.

Now that I understand more about the timeline, I am almost at the point where I can get a quiz to do what I want it to do

I am having some issues with a click box.  When I preview the project, the Correct caption appears like it should.  However, when I click outside the click box, I don't get a failure caption at all.  I have Success and Failure Checked.  I also have

Pause for Success/Failure Captions and Pause Projects when user clicks checked.

I read somewhere to place the clickbox at the top of the timeline and have it start at 0.5 seconds.

None of this works.  Any suggestions?

If you have the "Failure" checked and the "Pause for Success / Failure Caption" checked as well, it should work.

One question though : do you see the failure caption on your slide in Captivate? If not, then deselect the "Failure" checkbox in the Properties panel, then reselect it to re-generate the failure caption.

Also check for the size of the caption. It may be there, but so tiny that you don't see it...

Hope it helps..

Damien

Hi Damien,

Yes, the failure caption appears in Captivate, and the caption is large enough to see. I am going to try to regenerate all of the click boxes to see if that fixes the issue. As with most of my questions, there is probably a simple solution that I’m missing. My company is sending me to training soon thankfully.

Can you post a screenshot of the Timeline? Do you have any other interactive object on that slide?

What’s the best way to post a screen shot? I think I recall that images can’t be included in forum discussions (???)

I don't see the icon in my options that you have.  Can you see the item I attached using Insert Media?

Sorry it's not clear.  Captivate and the Surface Book do NOT get along well.

This Timeline looks right to me.

What is the action that you applied to the Click Box?

For Success: I have a green check mark appear

For Failure: A red X appears

I even tried taking out the pictures and using text (GREAT JOB / TRY AGAIN). Still the same issue with the failure. Nothing happens.

You are not talking about the Failure captions or am I misunderstanding?

Yes. I am talking about the Failure captions.

They are not working at all for some reason.

Do you have Infinite attempts checked for the click box?

Lilybiri picked it correctly.  You have Infinite Attempts turned on.  You won't see Failure captions that way.

I just changed it back to No. of Attempts 1 and it still doesn’t work. Is this a glitch? Is there a work around?

The failure caption still will not appear.  Even a simple text failure caption.  Am I missing another step somewhere?

What did you mean when you said:

For Success:  I have a green check mark appear

For Failure:  A red X appears

Are these images that you are trying to have appear instead of the failure captions? Or are you just using symbol characters of check marks and X marks in the feedback captions?

For my captions, I deleted the text and chose an image fill.

Ideally, I want a green check mark to appear if the student clicks in the clickbox area and a red X to appear when they click outside of it.

I thought the image fill was the issue, so I tried to do it again with just the words GREAT JOB if the user clicks in the clickbox and TRY AGAIN if the user clicks outside of it.

Everything still works fine when the click box is clicked. However, when I click outside the box, nothing happens.

I wonder if I’m (once again) trying to get Captivate to do something other than it’s design?

Incidentally, I recreated a blank presentation without graphics and it works fine. Could this be related to the size of the project?

Hmmm, Rod, I know you told this before but that is not my experience. The Failure event occurs only after the last attempt and is not available when you are set to Infinite Attempts. But the Failure caption appears for the click box when you click outside of it, at least it does for me. I was asking about the check marks as well, but apparently the OP used the default feedback shapes and filled them with an image instead of text. OP didn't use the events, moreover the Failure event is not available.

I'm thinking this is some random glitch.

Just for kicks I created a new project with the same options / properties.  I used the same fill options for the captions, and it worked perfectly.

I have no idea why this will not work in my other project.  Any ideas?

No idea, just being a corrupted slide or project I suspect.

I have some time. I’m going to try recreating the project to see if I have the same issue. So strange…

It could indicate your original project is corrupted.

Try copying and pasting all slides from that old project into a new blank project of the same size.
