Assigning a program to open cptx files

Hello,

I want to make sure I am not going to have any future problems with my new Captivate project.

This morning I had both Captivate 9 and Captivate 2017 installed on my machine.  I uninstalled Captivate 9 and Captivate 9 Voices because my computer was running incredibly slow, so I wanted to uninstall software I wasn't using regularly.  After doing so, the cptx files on my desktop were no longer represented with a green "Cp" square, but with an empty white rectangle.  When you double clicked on one of these files, I was asked by Windows to find a program to open these files. Ok, strange... I went to Adobe --> Adobe Captivate 2017 x64 --> and selected the "AdobeCaptivate".exe file.

So now the cptx files on my desktop open without a problem and are represented with the empty white rectangle with green "Cp" layer on top.  (See attachment.)  newicon.PNG

Because the icon is so add, I am concerned I could have problems down the road.  Does anyone have experience with this?

Having multiple versions of Captivate (and of other Adobe applications) on my systems, I learned since long time to use this approach:

  • Open first the application
  • Choose in the application for Open, and browse to the project file

That has avoided me already a lot of problems, because I am always sure to open the project in the correct application version.

There is no way to 'guarantee' that you will never have problems with Captivate or its project files.  If there was, this User Forum would not exist and books about troubleshooting Adobe Captivate would not now be over 400 pages in length.

Working with Captivate and multimedia e-learning always involves the possibility of running into issues. That's just the reality of this industry.  The more you learn, the better able to cope with the issues you encounter.

Hi Ryan, have you right clicked one of your captivate files and select Captivate but also place a tick in the box to "always use this app to open .cptx files"

cptx

Sorry, you must have missed some details in the original question: there are at least two versions of Captivate installed on this system. That means that you cannot use the approach 'Always.....' because CP9 files can be opened by CP2017, have the same extension as CP2017. If you do this, all cptx-files will be opened with the last installed version. That can be dangerous since CP2017 files cannot be opened in CP9.

Hi Lily, he states he has uninstalled CP9 ("I uninstalled Captivate 9 and Captivate 9 Voices because my computer was running incredibly slow") so all files should now open with the remaining installation of CP2017.
