Can I stil subscribe to Adobe captivate 8?

Explorer ,
Aug 20, 2015 Aug 20, 2015

One of the clients I work for, runs Adobe captivate 8.

I would like to install version 8 on my laptop as well so we can exchange projectfiles.

Is it possible to subscribe to version 8 with some sort of retroactive effect?

Say, starting July 2015 with the chance to upgrade to 9 until August 2016?

There seems to be no telephone number I can call.

Everything navigates to 'ask the forum'.

Please help.

Hi Myrax,

If you have or get a subscription to Captivate, then you should be able to run the older version if you want to, and upgrade whenever is convenient for you...

If you need the older software installer then you can still find it here:

Hope that helps!

Thanks, I tried two links on that page, but they both lead to Captivate 9 and not 8.

Also I would like the currency in Euro's since I'm located in The Netherlands.

Can you look again please?

Would be great!

Edit: or should I dowload AC through the file-links? See image below.

If yes: should I download file 1 or 2, or both?

And afterwards can I subscribe and get a legal key? I guess I will be prompted to do so within 30 days?

(without being forced to upgrade to 9 at that point?)

Yes, you need to follow the important instructions first, and then use the download links...  For Windows, you need both File 1 and File 2.

And yes, you would then have a 30-day free trial version until you subscribed or purchased the product.  You could continue to use Captivate 8 instead of Captivate 9 if you preferred; you would not be forced to upgrade.

Thanks!

I succeeded in downloading version 8 for Windows 64.

Just one thing; you mentioned above to follow the instructions closely and I've seen you write this before.

However I did skip this part: "Click «HERE» to visit this page first, " because again it lead me to Adobe Captivate #9, which I don't want yet.

Anyway, before the trial period is over I will activate my subscription and be on my way.

Once you activate your subscription, make sure you open all of the CPTX files you worked on with the trial version and turn off the 30 day expiry in Preferences then publish again.  Otherwise your published content will stop working after 30 more days and your client could be very unhappy.

Hi, I just checked the Preferences. I finally found it under Project > Start / End.

I guess I can undo the expiry date once I have subscribed?

Thanks for the warning, much appreciated!

Sure, glad to help.  Yes, that's just a quirky requirement of Adobe's servers where you have to act like you're going to download the current version in order to enable access to those direct links.

Rod also makes a good point about the using the Captivate trials.

Good luck with it!

This no longer leads me to a download for Captivate 8. Which is traumatic, as my computer crashed and 8 is gone. I have all my other files, but the apps were apparently not backed up.

I'm losing content all over the place, and am heartbroken. Any solutions, anybody, anywhere?

Yes.  Please make sure to carefully follow the important instructions there (required by Adobe's servers), or the Captivate 8 direct links won't work for you.

Hi Somnath,

All the links continue to work. Please make sure to carefully follow the important instructions there, which are required by Adobe's servers – or the Captivate 8 direct links won't work for you, and you'll get that access denied message instead.

Hope that helps.

Hi there, I'm back again and not very happy!

Maybe someone has another tip for me?

I downloaded 8.

There's a link on the screen: buy now. I did. I subscribed > to version 9, because there's no other option.

But I thougt I would be fine because of what was said on this topic.

Now I want to legalize my AC 8, but therefor I need a license key... which is only provided with Volume licenses, NOT the subscription-route.

So I'm back to square 1.

I called Adobe and they offer me I can buy al volume license for 9 and then downgrade it to 8.

I would prefer the subscription however.

Anybody any thoughts on this?

Hello again Myrax,

It's apples and oranges; there are two paths...  Generally if you have a subscription, then you can use whichever version you like, and you can move between them at any time.  The licensing is based on your Adobe ID login, and the software will run for as long as you maintain your subscription.

However, if you buy a standalone license instead, then you will receive only the exact version you purchased - not anything in the past (or future).  The one exception is if you got a Volume license (more complicated) instead of an Individual, then Adobe could possibly downgrade you to an older release.  In either case, the licensing is based on a fixed serial number and is perpetual, meaning the software will run indefinitely.

Hope that answers all your questions; if not then just post back!

Thanks for that reply. You're right.

The orange is: subscription.

The apple is: standalone license.

I really would like the subscription. But it's not possible (so they say) to subscripe to version 8. Only version 9.

And I do need 8.

Do you know a way around this?

And can you tell me the difference between a standalone license and al volume license? Because that's what I heard so far: I need to buy a volume license and then downgrade to 8.

Yes, it's possible.  It may say, "Subscribe to Captivate 9," but you can run version 8 instead.  Many subscribers still are, and many have both releases running on their machines at the same time.

If anybody else has told you otherwise, they're not correct.

There are a few differences in that volume licenses often aren't eligible for offers that Adobe makes for Individuals, plus some of the policies listed here:

Transfer of license, concurrency, CLP and EA policies | Adobe Buying Programs

In either event, no matter what you buy, if it doesn't work out for you then you can always change your mind or go the other way or get a refund using Adobe's return policy:

How to Exchange, Return, or Refund Adobe Software Products

This gives me hope...!

I know others have both systems, but they already had version 8 to begin with.

How can I do this?

If I subscribe to 9, it says 9 indeed, but then how do I get to install 8 on my computer instead of 9?

Can you please tell me?

I am doing this as we speak.

Now that I understand the difference between subscription/stand alone license/volume license, I understand what the page on your website does.

Believe it or not, but I actually did NOT do the part "important, do this first". Because that page looked too much like 'version 9'. I did mention in in this thread, but you probably didn't think I really did skip this.

I'm following the route on a different computer right now.

When this works, I want do this on my own laptop.

Do you think the already installed trial version interferes with a new download?

I intend to do it with another adobe ID.

If it works I will of course immediately subscripe and skip any further trial-periods...!

Great, glad to hear you're making progress on this.  But one other point is that if you already have a trial version for the release you want, you don't need to redownload or reinstall the same program again... They are the same software - it's just that the trial hasn't yet been activated.

Myrax32 wrote:

Those instructions are required by Adobe's servers.  It may look like you're getting version 9, but that's just to set a cookie on your browser which allows you to access the direct links for version 8.

(You might not have needed to follow those instructions because you already visited Adobe's trial page(s), and thus already had the cookie set.)

Please post back with how it all worked out for you!

I am grateful for your patience!

I tried installing on the other computer but I got an error on downloading; browser is not supported (freshly installed Firefox, so that's strange). So I couldn't complete the installation.

But: I did already get an e-mail from Adobe 'welcome, bla bla, you can subscribe here'.

(yeah, it says subscribe!).

So I think of this workaround: in my trial version of Adobe I can sign out from my Adobe ID.

And I quess I can afterwards sign in with another ID. Is that true?

Would it work if I signed in with the account I just got a mail from inviting me to subscribe...?

And then actually go ahead and hit the link 'subscribe' in the mail?

Or should I be worried that my trial version, when it launches, has a button 'License this software'?

Technically there should be no difference between stand alone (with license key) and subscription...

Yes, you can always sign out and sign in with another Adobe user ID.

AFAIK with Captivate, there is no difference in functionality between the subscription and the standalone licenses.  With other products like Lightroom or Acrobat, it's a different story as there are a lot of online/web features that don't come with the perpetual desktop-only version.

Great, I'm getting the hang of this.

I'm going to complete the subscription now and let you know.

Not sure whether the activation gets done immediately, otherwise I'll be back tomorrow.

It's almost 11 PM here.

EDIT: up to 24 hours.

But I have hardly any doubts now. So, for now I'm very happy and can get a good night rest!

EDIT 2: 8 hours later. It worked indeed!

My credit card has been billed and more importantly: when I launch Adobe captivate 8, it does not warn me about my trial period.

And after the second launch (pff, not the first), the project expiration date also has disappeared under Preferences.

(you don't have to actively do this yourself nowadays).

Anyway: thank you, thank you, thank you!

One last note: I'm sorry to say that Adobe would not give me this solution when I talked to them on the phone, and mailed my problem.

While, looking in hine sight: it is a pretty simple solution. So thanks again!
