I have had Captivate 8 & 9 installed on my windows 10 laptop since I got it a year ago. I have used both versions multiple times. Captivate 9 started giving me a publish failed message today when I would try & preview a project. It didn't matter which project, or what content was in it.
I have uninstalled the program deleting preferences. I have removed the entire Captivate folder from the app data folder so a new one is created, cleaned out cache, and cannot come up with an answer on what is going on. It is almost impossible to use the program if I cannot even preview any project in Captivate 9. Captivate 8 on my system has no issues.
This occurred before update 2 of Captivate 9, and I had done the previous updates. Neither the update nor the reinstall or anything else i have tried is changing anything.

Did you also delete the Layouts folder in Public Documents?

I had also deleted that folder, and run the clear prefs file in the utils folder. Can you remind me of the path to that layouts folder on windows so I can try doing it again? I have been searching & tried everything I found on the internet to correct the issue. That was one of them I tried initially but honestly cannot remember how to do that again.

I just tested Captivate 9 again & something I did seems to have helped because I now seem able to preview some of my HTML5 projects. The issue seems to now be limited to not being able to preview any new responsive projects I create using Captivate 9. My Captivate 8 version is working fine. I have no trouble with any SWF files at all, this seems to only be related to HTML5 content that I recently created in case that helps narrow things down.

Try uploading the HTML5 output to a web server and testing it from there. Your issue with playback from your local drives might just be browser security kicking in.
