It seems that templates created in previous versions will not open in Captivate 9. I have also tried to open and play the tutorials and they will not play. I am not sure where to go from here.

You do not 'open' a template, you create a project file From a Template. Are you sure to talk about a cptl, a template file? From which version are you upgrading? Which tutorials do you try to open?

I am new to Captivate so not upgrading, just starting with version 9. My company has courses that have been created in older versions of Captivate and also custom templates that were created to use in creating eLearning. I am not able to open courses or the templates. Is there a way to get to the template to create the project without first opening the template? I have tried to open the What's new in Captivate 9 tutorial and a couple others with no success. I am not sure if there is something wrong with my installation.
Any guidance you can provide would be much appreciated.

If those were very old versions, upgrading will cause issues. You didn't answer my question about which versions were used.
About What's new: is it part of the Help-file? Or did you click on the button 'Sample Projects/Tutorials'? Can you open a sample project? You should find them (for Win) here:
C:\Users\Public\Documents\Adobe\eLearning Assets\SampleProjects

I believe the templates were created in version 6 and/or 7. I clicked the Sample Projects/Tutorial button in Captivate. The tutuorial opens but won't play.

Captivate 9 should be able to open Cp6 or Cp7 project files (CPTX format) or templates (CPTL) format.
Are these the file endings of the templates you are talking about, or are your trying to open a file of a different format, e.g. SWF (which is an output format)?
IF you are indeed unable to open a CPTX or CPTL file from these earlier versions then it may be corrupted.

The one I have tried to use is a cptl format. Would it help to have Captivate uninstalled and reinstalled on my laptop?

Each cptl or cptx file IS a zipped folder, don't try to unzip it. Sometimes it happens that they are recognized (in this case by Sharepoint, but I had it also when sending files) as zipped folder. Check the extension: it should be cptx or cptl. For the last format you have to use Project from Template as I told already.
Did you have older versions of CP installed on that laptop?

No older versions. New laptop.

Can you open the sample files? Do you launch Captivate as administrator?

We have some courses that were developed in Captivate 9. They have been saved to a Sharepoint site. When we try to open those, they are the zipped files, not the course that can be edited. Any thoughts on why those would not open correctly? They don't have the zipped icon so they don't look like zipped files until they are opened. I am guessing that could be the way they were saved to the Sharepoint site?

So, the files from sharepoint, when you download the zip file and unzip, are you finding files with .cptx or .cptl or .html and .swf extensions?
Part of this dialogue is semantics, as the files may be Captivate source files, template files or may be published Captivate output.
The source files will have different versions and only open under the correct version of the application.
The template files may not launch Captivate when clicked, may not be opened within Captivate, but may be referenced to create a new file. On the Captivate Menu, File -> Create New From Template.
The published files aren't editable, but should launch training under the correct browser. If you only have published output, you won't be editing them, only re-creating the course.
And, to make matters worse, someone may create a tutorial file that contains any or all of the above!

Maybe your 'templates' are too many versions back for Captivate 9 to read.
What version of Captivate was used to create these templates?
