After problems with total transparency of all captivate windows I deleted the preference folder. It has now recreated that folder successfully.
Unfortunately, now when i open any project and try to go into publish or project settings i simply get the dreaded spinning beach ball... obviously I am using a Mac.
Anyone have any quick fixes or suggestions?

Can you explain your work flow to delete Preferences folder? Did you clear
cache as well?

Hi Lilybiri
In answer to your question, no I didn't clear my cache, originally I simply deleted the preference folder as described below:
I have since deleted reinstalled and updated (using update path) captivate 5 and this appears to have resolved most of my original problems
However, I still get the bouncing beach ball and ultimately a crash whenever I go into publish, publish settings or preferences via the normal associated routes so am at my wits end at the moment.
Having uninstalled and reinstalled the whole suite (E-Learning Suite 2) i am wondering if not clearing the cache may have something to do with the lingering problems or would that have deleted that folder as well. If not can you lead me to where I might find it... Alternatively give any other possible solutions?
Many thanks in advance.
Kevin

When installing an upgrade, you always have to clear the Preferences, and the Layouts folders. Cache can grow very quickly, reason why I recommend to clear it regulrarly.
