Captivate quiz: show picture passed on correct or incorrect answer

New Here ,
Apr 16, 2018 Apr 16, 2018

I would like to create an action that shows a picture if a learner gets and answer right or wrong. I have a stock image of a guy smiling and one frowning. I want to show him smiling if the answer is correct and show him frown if incorrect but i can’t figure out which variable controls the correct or failure feedback.

any help is appreciated.

Check if the default feedback messages are shapes. If yes, take out the

text and fill the shape with your image.

I want them to receive the correct and incorrect feedback, but I also want to show an image if they get it right or wrong. Storyline is so simple. I can show a image on the correct or incorrect layer. is there a variable that decides which box to show whether it’s correct or incorrect? I could use that variable to create an action but I can’t find the variable that decides which caption to show.

I understand your dilemma but the problem here is that Captivate's quiz question slides and feedback are not designed to work the same way as Storyline's.

Other than resorting to JavaScript programming, there's no default way to get your smiling or frowning image to appear at the same time, as the standard feedback captions.

Please log an enhancement request for this. Captivate by now SHOULD really have something to compete with Storyline's layers.

I agree with you that Storyline offers a little more flexibility in this particular area.  However, Captivate also has other flexibility that Storyline lacks (e.g. you can position each feedback caption anywhere on the stage).  So both tools have their advantages and disadvantages.

A shape can be filled with an image, and you can add text to it as well. In the default setup, the feedback messages are shapes. If you want the same image for all slides, you can edit the feedback shapes on the master slides.

OK, if you want to do it in a more complicated way, you'll need shared actions (to be preferred over advanced actions since you'll want to do this for multiple quesions).  You have to take out the first step of the Submit process by deleting the Feedback messages. That means also that the playhead will be released when the Submit button is clicked;  You'll need a shape button to pause the slide, with a pausing point later than the pausing point of the quiz slide. Create what you want in a multistate shape with 3 states:

  1. Normal state: invisible, Alpha and Stroke = 0
  2. Correct state: image and text you want to show as feedback
  3. Incorrect state: ditto

Use the Success and Last Attempt actions to show the correct state. If you don't check the option 'Retain state when revisiting', this will not be a problem during review. However; I suppose that you have only one attempt on question level.

Does anyone know why i can’t update the captio on quiz master slides? It won’t let me edit the text at all. I need to change the font and it won’t budge.

Because the Default labels are under Quiz Preferences, Default Labels,

The styles are in the Object Style Manager under the Quizzing objects. Be sure to check if you are using shapes or captions in Preferences, Defaults.

BTW filling the shapes with images works perfectly, I will probably blog about that.
