Captivate "connection error" on slide video

Hi fellow CP users,

Here is the issue I am looking for help with. I am inserting a flash video into a captivate 8 project and only getting a "connection error" message when I try to preview. I've also tried uploading the video as a MP4. Both of these things have worked for me in the past with the same file types and Captivate version I am currently using.

The only thing I can think of that is different is that my laptop was replaced by IT a few weeks ago, and this is the first time I have performed these functions since that time, so I am wondering if it is a setting or something that needs adjusting.

Other instances I found where this happened seemed to be mainly in CP 5 and 6, and in those cases they seemed to be seeing the error after publish, with the video working fine in preview mode. I tried publishing according to some of the fixes suggested but still no luck.

Any help appreciated! Thanks!

Your issue may be related to the fact that your new laptop hasn't been set up by IT so that your publish folder location is a trusted location in your Flash Global Security settings.

I am having the same issue. I have spent hours combing through forums trying everything I can possibly think of to no resolve. I am playing the .swf file in browser, everything works fine until the first video is supposed to load, then I get a very brief 'connection error' message, followed by 'loading', however the video fails to load. I have tried using different video files, different computers, and in different browsers, but I get the same failure every time. I even created a very short test project recording video directly into the captivate project and the video still won't play. This used to work and I don't know what has changed in the last 2 months to explain why the software seems to be broken. I am beyond frustrated. If anyone has any suggestions please let us know!

Did you try my suggestion about setting your Flash Global Security?

Yes. I have the published folder (with .swf and video files) on my Desktop, and I added the folder in the Flash Global Security Settings. It still won't load the video though...

OK.  Well if you are using Chrome as a browser, setting up Flash Global Security via your Control Panel Flash Player manager app is not going to do any good.  Chrome doesn't use that method.

Another way to configure Flash security is to right click on the Flash content when it is playing in the browser, and from the context menu that pops up, choose the option to configure settings.  When the dialog box appears, choose the Advanced Tab and then scroll down to the part where it allows you to configure Trusted Locations.  Add your folder there.  You may find that although you added it already by another method, it doesn't appear in this dialog at all.

Eureka!!! Thank you so much for your help, Rod! I was finally able to get it to work by adding the folder in my Global Security Settings panel (http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager04.html).

A couple minor issues I ran into. When I right click on the content in Chrome, and click on settings, there is no Advanced Tab to select. However, when I clicked on the (?) icon in the top right corner of the Adobe Flash Player Settings window that pops up, it took me to the URL above. From here I was not able to add a folder to the trusted locations list. Even when I choose the option to add a folder, it only allows me to select files. If I select all of the files in the folder that my captivate project is in, the problem persists.

My work around was to select a file to add to the trusted locations, then edit that location and replace it with the directory path that I copy and pasted from Windows file explorer for the captivate project folder. Low and behold, my videos are now playing again!!

Thanks again, Rod. I owe you a beer!
