Hi,
We are thinking of buying Captivate 2017, we have had Capitvate 8 before. Our projects are published in flash, but now we have problems with flash, of course.
Does anyone know if it is possible to open old project-files from Captivate 8, in Captivate 2017 and convert them from flash to some other format?
(Our Captivate 8 got lost in a computer and server change, and the IT-guys have not had time, or bothered, to root for it yet)
Which format should we choose instead? HTML5 has not worked for us.
Thanks,

You can open those files in CP2017, but be prepared to have some editing work. Not all features supported in SWF are available for HTML5 output. Moreover there can be some upgrade issues as well. Just one tip: don't try to convert them at the same time to responsive projects but keep to rescalable HTML5.

A few tips here about the kind of things you would need to consider when migrating projects from Flash to HTML5:

Apart from HTML5, here aren't now really any other options as far as output. Publishing to an EXE is really publishing to a self-running Flash file. So if Flash is off the table, so is Captivate EXE output. Publishing to PDF requires end users to all have Flash Player plugins installed in their PDF reader software. So that's really out of the question as well.

Does anybody knows what happens if you choose to publish in mp4?

You lose all interactivity, because MP4 is a passive video format. If you used Closed Captioning, you'll lose that as well because it is part of the skin.

Lieve is correct, of course.
But if your pieces are NOT interactive, they're just linear, publishing to MP4 is a Great Solution.
MP4 plays back very reliably, especially if you have access to a streaming service (or just want to host on YouTube).
If you have interactivity, good, then MP4 isn't best.
But if not, I suggest MP4. You can get closed-captions integrated a variety of ways (i.e. upload to youtube, caption, dowload SRT, then implement a supporting player)

I just finished republishing a bunch of CP8 files as .mp4 (YouTube Widescreen HD) in CP 2017. As Lieve and Rod mentioned, you loose interactivity, but the conversion worked fine for me.

Sure, but I never understand why developers use Captivate for a non-interactive eLearning course. For a pure video I would use Prexenter Video XPress or Camtasia. Power of a good eLearning is all about interactivity. Sorry for repeating this all the time, but I have been training and teaching many years and learning efficiency has always been my first priority.
