Cp9: Linking Ctpv projects through a pop-up dialog on the main captivate project.

Explorer ,
Jun 23, 2016 Jun 23, 2016

I run Windows 7 professional and my Captivate version is 9.0.1.320.

Hi all,

I want to link cptv projects by using  pop-up dialogs on the main captivate project, but I don't know how to do it.

I know that this idea can be implemented on Captivate, since I saw it on another online course.

Example:

  1. The hyperlink of the button on slide 1a opens a pop-up dialog that has embedded another captivate project (see step 2).

2. When the user finishes watching the embedded captivate on the pop-up dialog,
he then closes the dialog by clicking X button and goes back to the main captivate project (i.e. slide 1a.)

3. What the user sees after closing the pop-up dialog.

Do you possibly know how I could do that? Does it involve advanced actions?

Thank you a lot in advance.

Kind regards,
Iasmi

I'm sorry, don't understand. Now you talk about embedding a Captivate demonstration, the original question was about linking to another Captivate file. If you want to embed a CP-demonstration, convert it to mp4 and insert it as a video. A demonstration is meant for passive watching, which means a video would be OK. I would prefer a better quality Video Demo but that is up to you. This last explanation is different from the first one.

They will not be embedded, but separate objects. You have the action 'Open another project' or 'Open URL or File' that can be used to open another published Captivate file. You have to be careful to keep the correct hierarchy when publishing the course: the links to the project or to the file have to be relative and correct.

However: do not expect to be navigated automatically back to the main Captivate module.

Hi Lilybiri,

thanks for your prompt reply.

I've used the action 'Open another project' or 'Open URL or File' but that doesn't create a pop-up dialog over the window of the main captivate project.

Conversely, when I use these actions the second Captivate project opens on a new web page and when I want to go back to the main captivate project the hyperlink takes me back to the landing page of my main captivate project and not to the slide (i.e. see slide 1a in my example above) where my button initially was.

Anyway thank you for your help.

Kind regards,

Iasmi

I didn't understand the question was about the 'popup'. You want them to be able to read that popup before the other project opens? You will have to create an advanced action in that case, which:

  1. shows that popup that is first hidden
  2. delays the next action by x seconds (how many seconds do they need)?
  3. closes the popup
  4. opens the other project.

I don't know what you mean by a 'landing page' because you seem to make a difference between a 'page' and a slide, where Captivate has only slides. Can you explain?

Hi Lilybiri,

No I don't want them to read the pop-up before the other project opens.

I want them to:

1. Click a button on the main captivate project (slide 1a) to open a pop-up dialog with a captivate demonstration in it (i.e. slide 1b).

2. I want the pop-up dialog (i.e. slide 1b) to open over the window of the main captivate project with the blue round button (i.e.  slide 1a).

3. When the user finishes watching the demo I want them to able to click the Close button of the pop-up dialog (see slide 1b) and go back to the slide of the main captivate project with the blue round button on it (i.e. slide 1a).

(On my previous post by "Landing page" I mean the 1st slide of the main captivate project).

I hope the above make sense.

Thank you,

Iasmi

Hi Lilybiri,

I think that this is the answer that I was looking for.

Do you think this could work for a Captivate Simulation as well? i.e. convert the cptv simulation into a video.

By the way do you possibly know the difference between the video and executable when you try to publish a captivate file?

Kind regards,
Iasmi

No, a video can't have any interactivity at all. A software simulation is interactive, the user has to perform certain actions. In that case you need either to copy all those software simulation slides in the main project and solve the navigation, or you have to insert a link to another project or file as explained in the beginning of this thread.

If you publish to an executable (exe or app, you have the choice for Windows or for Apple) you have a standalone version. Beware: this is Flash-based, which means it will not play on mobile devices, only on desktop/laptops that support the Flash player. It can be used where no internet connection is available (same with interactive pdf).

Hi Lilybiri,

thanks a lot for your help. I really appreciate it.

It is strange that I cannot do the same for the simulation. In the online captivate course that I completed recently (as a learner) the simulation opened in a pop-up dialog. Well I will investigate that a bit more.

Thank you again,
Iasmi

LATEST

It cannot open in a dialog box, it will have been a separate window.
