Edited Powerpoint Slides won't save in Captivate 9

Community Beginner ,
Jun 21, 2016 Jun 21, 2016

I've just started using a new Notebook PC. I'm using Captive 9 with PowerPoint 2016 with a Windows 10 Home operating system.  Updates for all installed. When editing a slide in an embedded file, PowerPoint opens as before and I can edit the slide.  But when I select save I get the message 'Failed to save the updated Microsoft PowerPoint presentation'.  Any suggestions?

Are you sure about 'embedded'? To keep the roundtripping it should be 'linked', not 'embedded'.

Editing an embedded file always worked on my previous Notebook.

That was very strange. Maybe someone else can help.

It's possible the new operating system has resulted in a change to the pathway where the Captivate project thinks your embedded PPT should be located.

You may need to re-link the PPT to the Captivate project or remove and set it up again entirely.

To test your suggestion I imported another PPT file into the Lesson.  While linked I opened a single slide and modified the text (italicized the heading).  When I then went to save, the PowerPoint view disappeared and the same failure message appeared.

I'm inclined to think that either there is an incompatibility between Captivate 9 and PowerPoint 2016 or some default setting on the newly installed programs is miss-set.

It's sounding more to me like some kind of permissions issue.

Are you launching Captivate using Run As Administrator command?

Are you working on a CPTX file and PPT that are both located on your own PC hard drive for which you have full Administrator permissions?

Tried running as Administrator but no joy.  I also changed PowerPoint Settings to run all macros and ununstalled the non-Microsoft add-ins.  Still no joy.

I did find a work-around:

  1. Re-link the pptx file in Captivate and save as a file on Desktop. Green Dot beside file name in Library indicates Captivate file in sync with new Desktop file.
  2. Open desktop file with Powerpoint, edit as required and save.
  3. Return to Captivate where pptx file now has Orange Dot to indicate that the file is out of sync.
  4. Right-click on file name in Library and select Update.
  5. After a long wait a Green Dot indicates file in sync and screen shows the edit correctly.
  6. Save Captivate file.

If anyone knows a better way to resolve the issue, I'd like to know.

Thanks both for your help.

You're definitely NOT on a corporate network or using any kind of My Documents virtualisation, correct?

Correct. I've moved everything to the Notebook PC including moving CPTX files to the /Documents/My Adobe Captivate Projects/ folder.

No help for you, but I can confirm the same problem. Import works fine, but trying to round trip from Cap to edit a slide or edit the presentation throws an error. PowerPoint will open and you can make the edits, but when you try to save it to return to Cap, you get:

If PowerPoint is already open with a different PPTX file open, Cap never opens the linked file and eventually returns:

If you open the PPTX manually in PowerPoint and make edits, then shut down PowerPoint completely, Cap will recognize that the linked file is no longer current. Clicking the library red dot will synchronize with the updated PPTX, although it seems to take substantially longer than with PPT 2013.

If you open the PPTX manually in PowerPoint and make edits, but PowerPoint is still running (even with only a different PPTX file open,) Cap will recognize that the linked file is no longer current, but clicking the library red dot will throw an error:

Captivate 9.0.0.223 running as admin

PowerPoint 2016 version 16.0.6965.2058

Bit off topic, but maybe you missed the upgrade released a while ago: 9.0.1.320 is the present release.

Thanks - new PC and fresh installation. I'm surprised the update check didn't catch that.

Unfortunately, the PPT 2016 issue still persists - no change.

I didn't try to answer your question, suppose it is (again) incompatibility between versions. Captivate updates are not automatically delivered which is a pity because they often solve bugs.

That's OK - thanks for the reminder about the update. I did a check for updates immediately after the install - that's what I meant about being surprised that it wasn't caught.

I've reported the PPT 2016 issue as a bug.

Feeling the same pain and concur with all the "fix attempts" to no avail. I re-installed and updated Cap9 a few times (just an hour ago!) and still same issue. Not being a PC geek, feel very frustrated as I've a large body of instructional design work in various powerpoint file versions that now seem in limbo.

On probably a related note, also having failure in round tripping (e.g., exporting captions to MS Word). After the File>Export>Project Captions and Closed Captions is selected and the Save button clicked, the save box just hangs there at 4% completed in freeze state, which causes me to have to cancel out with nothing accomplished.

Any other insights/remedies much appreciated!

Hi there

For the word bit, I might suggest trying to open word separately before attempting any export. Then try clicking File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings and enabling all macros. You don't have to leave it that way, but it's something I would certainly try and see if that allows the word bit to work.

Cheers... Rick

Well seems like Rod and Adobe have no clue! I have the same issue Captivate 9 and Powerpoint 16. There is an obvious problem with captivate and I hope someone will fix it. They sell a product, say it will work with Powerpoint and they are wrong! I await a fix or atleast a snarky response.

Confirming that even after today's update to 9.0.2.437, the round-tripping error with PowerPoint 2016 still persists, although the error messages are now different:

Have you contacted Adobe Captivate 9 technical support team for this round-trip editing error with the latest MS Office 2016 PowerPoint application? This error has also impacted me since I have most of my contents stored in PowerPoint files for my clients. I hope Adobe can send out a fix patch for Adobe Captivate 9 soon.

Looking forward to hearing from Adobe Captivate Technical Support Team soon!

Dr. Z.

I can update the linked PowerPoint file as a whole by clicking the red dot to synchronize the file but it takes a while to do compared to updating the content slide by slide. You've just have to be patient. Now the problem is I CAN'T update individual slides through the round-trip editing once I've updated my MS Office PowerPoint to 2016 version. Any helps would be appreciated!

By the way, this round-trip editing between PPT 2016 and Cp8/9 problem has been reported as a bug to the Microsoft by the Adobe engineering team. I just have to wait for Microsoft to send out the patch/fix for the MS Office 2016.
