Embedded (child) Captivate files with quizzes - export total score to Parent & LMS

Hi folks. I've got a bit of a curly one here...The penultimate slide in my Captivate show is where I get the learners to view and demonstrate 12 core tasks. This penultimate slide has a column of 12 buttons down the left side. The main body of this slide is where I display 12 associated simulation files. (I use Advance Actions for each button to hide/show the associated simulations files accordingly). Each of my 12 simulation files opens with two buttons on the opening slide. One button is called Watch it, the other button is called Do it. Depending on the selection, the user will Jump To the 1st of the Watch it slides or the first of the Do it slides. The Do it slides are where I get the learners to replicate actions of the Watch it slides. The Do it actions are currently linked to a Quiz. This quiz displays the results of the quiz on a final score slide. Note also, the "parent" Captivate file does not have any quiz associated with it. All the quizzes are embedded in the 12 simulation files I've just mentioned. I've looked at Lieve's Intermediate Score Slides blog and this is kinda what I'm trying to achieve. The problem is, the scenario outlined in this Blog works on the premise that each quiz is embedded in the one (parent) captivate file. Ideally, I'd like to capture the results of each (child) quiz and render those results in the Parent Captivate file on a Total Score slide which I'd like to then push out to the LMS. Is this possible? Thanks in advance. Richard.

There is no way to do what you are trying to do with default Captivate functionality.  Published Captivate SWFs are simply NOT designed to be nested and played from inside other Captivate SWFs.

The only way you would possibly achieve your objective with your current files would be to hire an ActionScript 3 programmer to build you some kind of bridge between your nested SWFs and the outer shell SWF.

But my suggestion is that you just do it the way Lilybiri shows in her blog.  That's the way Captivate is designed to work.

Hi Rod

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. I had a brief look at SCORM packager ... might explore further. What's JS by the way? Last resort would be to push all the content into one large captivate file... a highly ineligent solution but one that I may be forced to accept.
Warm regards,

Richard.

No, Richard, this is not possible.

You could try to have different Captivate files, and use JS to summarize the results from each file. Or use the SCORM packager.

Would the file be too big if you kept everything in one file and used my approach for intermediate score slides?

Hi Lilybiri

Sorry.. it's late in the day and I'm fried. Thank you also for sharing your thoughts and yes... curious about what JS means...

Goodness me... JS = Javascript! (Just kill me please...)

Ummm... I stumbled on an exercise published by Pooja where she scraped weather data (location, temperature etc) off a website and populated those values into variables she created in her Captivate file.

I had hoped, based on this, that I could have exported the test results from my quizes into a shared HTML document (that is part of the Parent's published folder) which could then be pulled into a slide on the Parent Captivate file using Parent-level variables...

Am I living in dreamland???

At present yes, without having JS (sorry JavaScript) skills.  But you will shortly be in luck...

Hello Rod (and Lilybiri)

I'm very curious about what you meant by me shortly being in luck??

Are you touting forthcoming Captivate functionality??

It would be great for Captivate build a suitable solution into their core capability without the need for engaging a programmer.

I'll nonetheless proceed as you've both recommended and keep an eye out for any promising updates.

Warm regards to you both and thanks for your support.

Richard.

LATEST

It's not from Adobe, so it's not a Captivate update.

It's something the Widget King and I have been working on. No details yet.
