Getting HTML5 video to play in SharePoint 2013 - instructions I found I won't work.

I previously saw the directions below posted on how to play Captivate HTML5 videos on SharePoint 2013.

Q. Can I upload Captivate output to SharePoint – where SharePoint is being used as our intranet?

A. Yes!

While there are articles on the web about using Flash output (SWF) in SharePoint, this note assumes HTML5 output from Captivate.

1. Publish your HTML5 output from Captivate to a local folder

2. Rename index.html to something like project_name.aspx (make sure you are editing the extension – so you don’t get project_name.apsx.html) – We are doing this so that SharePoint(and the IIS web server) will know this is content to display – a web page, not a text file to open like a word document.

3. Open the top level folder in windows explorer (we will copy the web page and supporting folders form this in a moment)

4. In the destination document library in SharePoint create a folder for this project (see the File Tab on the ribbon for the new folder tool)

5. Open the new folder

6. From the ribbon in SharePoint select Files Tab and then Explorer view

7. Copy all the content including sub folders from the local folder to the SharePoint explorer window

8. Then you can link to the project_name.aspx file from a SharePoint web or wiki page

9. Tested on SharePoint 2013 – should work on SharePoint 2010

When I follow these directions and click on the newly titled index.aspx file, a new webpage opens however all I get is a spinning icon - my content never loads. Have these directions worked for anyone, and if so, did you do anything different that these specific directions? I am not a programmer and I do not have access to go in and change any code within out SharePoint site to view the HTML5 output files. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Why not just upload the published HTML5 Captivate course folder into your SharePoint site, then simply insert a hyperlink to the index.html file on the apsx page? You can edit the hyperlink to have your course open in a new tab window.

Done - uploaded the folder to the Documents library, is this the correct location?

Go to the course folder that you uploaded into the Documents library, open it up and find the index.html file. Right click and select Properties. Select and copy the Address (URL). Be sure you copied the whole address. Then, go to your apsx page in SharePoint. Edit the page and type in the name of your course or whatever you want the link to say. Highlight the text and Select the Insert Tab from the ribbon in SharePoint. Then, select the Link button and select the From Address option. Paste the URL link in the Address entry box. Select Ok. Congratulations, you should have a hyperlink on your page. There are a set of options when you highlight the link in edit mode on the SharePoint ribbon that allows you to have the link open in a new window instead of the current one. When you select the link, your course should load as normal in your web browser.

Hello,

I followed your steps but have a question as the end result was that the link opened the document library page and not the actual html file.

Go to the course folder that you uploaded into the Documents library, open it up and find the index.html file.
Right click and select Properties.
Select and copy the Address (URL). Be sure you copied the whole address. (the address in the browser navigation bar? i don't see any other address in the properties window)
Then, go to your apsx page in SharePoint.
Edit the page and type in the name of your course or whatever you want the link to say.
Highlight the text and Select the Insert Tab from the ribbon in SharePoint.
Then, select the Link button and select the From Address option.
Paste the URL link in the Address entry box.
Select Ok.

For me, didn't work. The only URL was the one to the sharepoint page of the html file.

When you right click on the index file after uploading your published course to SharePoint, select Properties and a window will pop up that looks like my screenshot below:

Hi Jade,

You also need to be sure the folder the project is in is public facing, that means it can be viewed by anyone on the internet. Just ask your IT guys/gals. They will be able to confirm that.

I have the same problem. I load everything into sharepoint and point to the index.html link....then the wheel starts spinning like it is looking for files/folders and can't find them. I spoke to Adobe and they said that the server may not be set up to handle HTML5 content...trying to verify that with our IT right now. Adobe wouldn't help any further than that. I even asked them if I needed to remove everything from the folders (at, assets, etc.) and place them in the main folder since it looks like the index file cannot find the file(s) its looking for and they wouldn't give me an answer other than if its working on your machine it should be working on the sharepoint site and we can't help you about your sharepoint site....really now good support because I just wanted to understand what it is looking for and can't find.

You also need to confirm with the IT department that Sharepoint is set up to serve JSON files. They are now used in HTML5 content to deliver some of the images.

Hi Lisa. When I have to upload to SharePoint, I change "Publish as" to Video. The MP4 output is then accepted by SharePoint.
