Hot Spots in responsive quiz questions - lose dimensions during design

New Here ,
Dec 09, 2016 Dec 09, 2016

Hi, I seem to have an issue with Captivate 9 on PC. I have created a new responsive project, add in a single hot spot quiz question and make no changes.

At the top of main active screen area there are the three default screen resolution modes to click between.

As soon as I swap to one of the other resolutions the hotspot is shrunk to a 4x15 box, if I return to the original screen resolution it is also shrunk to 4x15.

I have tried hotspot properties and for position tried 'Smart Position', 'Lock size and Position' and selecting both and neither.

I cannot seem to find a way to keep a Hot Spot maintain its pixel dimensions. Does this issue affect other users? Is there a solution please?

Many thanks for any help!

Did you clean the Preferences, delete the Layouts and Sample Projects folders (Public Documents under Adobe\eLearning Assets) when installing the patch?

Did you start with the primary view? In the default behavior, the size of the hotspot is set to % for Width and Auto for Height. That means that the hotspot will size down on the lower breakpoint views depending on the width of the browser resolution. That looks like the most logical way to tread a hotspot (and most objects in responsive projects).

What did you change to the Position properties on the Primary view?

Hi Lilybiri, thank you for responding to my bug report.

I don’t think you appreciate the amount to which it is broken when you resize the screen. The hotspot loses all memory of it’s initial size and becomes a 4px by 15px tiny box, at all screen sizes, it never returns to it’s original size. (yes I started with the primary view)

Fixing width and height and locking it’s size doesn’t work either.

It’s broken and it is a bug and it needs fixing please!

Best wishes, Jeff…

You have to know that I never answer a question without double-checking and I am NOT able to reproduce the issue you describe. It may be a bug, but I expect it to happen to anyone with the same version of Captivate.

I am using 9.0.2.437. The Hotspot question in responsive design is working as expected for me. Please, do not reproach me anything, I just try to help and in case you misunderstand: I am just a simple user like you. I am NOT working for Adobe, only spending free time on these forums. I did also take out your personal credentials, to avoid you to have spam. This is a public forum.

If you think it is a bug, please log a bug report which will be much more efficient. Try first to check if you have the latest version, if you respected the Release notes when installing the latest patch.

Hi Lilybiri,

Very sorry, I decided afterwards to raise this as a bug report and thought it was a response from Adobe tech support.

Please accept my apologies for not checking, I am very appreciative of anyone who is prepared to take the time to try and help out.

Just warned you: I cannot reproduce your issue, which means that this also very possible that same happens for the CP team. Try first to give answers to my questions in my last answer.

I am currently using the latest Windows version of Captivate, which is the same as the one you mention 9.0.2.437.

We are on a Windows 7 platform and we normally use IE11, however Chrome Version 53.0.2785.143 m (64-bit) exhibits the same behavior.

Thanks for the feedback though, as this does then suggest it might be a more local issue.

many thanks, Jeff

thank you for that idea, it was indeed the right idea, I went to:

Hot fix for Adobe Captivate 9 issues

and then did this instruction:

(5) Delete Captivate preferences.

  1. Navigate to the folder where Captivate is installed on your computer
Note: On Windows, the default location is typically C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Captivate 9 x64.
  2. Open the utils folder.
  3. Double-click CleanPreferencesWin.bat.

Now when opening a new project and adding a hot spot, it will maintain its original size and resize based upon screen resolution.

Thank you for your help with resolving this, very helpful!

That work flow has to be done for any patch/upgrade. It is always in the release notes, most users do not bother to read them however.

Cleaning Preferences can delete some custom item, maybe you could read this blog post about work flows to keep the customization:

Captivate 8.0.1 Install? Keep your Customisation! - Captivate blog

Although it was written for 8.0.1 it is stil valid for 9.
