How can I stop the progression to the next slide?

New Here ,
Sep 04, 2017 Sep 04, 2017

Hello,

I want that there is only one way to get to the next slide: by using the button or click box (I tried it with both) at the right side of the page. I added a click box and chose the option "stop until user clicks" (the wording may vary as I'm using Captivate 10 - 2017 in German). The click box appears after 1,7 seconds and pauses the project. But when I click two times in the middle of the slide it moves forward to the next slide. This happens on sites with drag-n-drop and on normal sites (only text).

I did not find an answer for this problem. The project is a power point import, unfortunately I cannot remember if I chose the move forward automatically or by clicking.

Maybe someone knows what to do!?

Best regards

Claudio

(I'm using Captivate 9 and released the course in moodle)

Can you post a screenshot of the timeline?

Check also the number of attempts for the click box or the button? What is the Success action? If the number of attempts is not infinite, what is the Last attempt action?

Have a look at:

Yes, of course: 2017-09-05_09h30_08

I chose unlimited attempts and success action is "go to the next slide".

Thank you!

The timeline is not totally visible. I see two interactive objects, and suspect that the click box has been added when importing the PPT-slides. Can you check its size, because if it is indeed that automatically added click box it will be covering up the slide. SInce the shape button has no pausing point, if the CB covers the slide, it is normal that you'll proceed to the next slide after a couple of clicks. If you click on the slide before reaching the start of the timeline of the CB, nothing will happen, but once you are in the active part of the CB the action Go to Next slide will occur.

The click box has been added by me, it is above the shape button. I tried it with and without the click box. How can I add a pausing point to the shape button? Timing -> stop after 0,1 sec? That's what I did.

Did you read that article? It has also reference to several other articles about the Timeline. Please, you need some more insight in the timeline. Lack of that insight is the cause of about 1/3rd of the questions not only in this forum but wherever Captivate questions appear.

Challenges for Starters - Captivate blog

You cannot have two interactive objects in the same location! Depending on the type of output this will cause you different issues, either only the one stacked on top, or none will be functional.

When you insert a shape, and convert it to a button the default behavior is that it will pause at 1,5secs. That pause will divide the shape button's timeline in an active and an inactive part and the pause indicator will be visible. Setting the active part to such a short time like you mentioned (0,1secs) has no sense, especially since that shape buton appears from the start of the slide. Why did you change that default setting? It would mean that the timeline would be paused right from the start of the slide. Be carefu: the shape button has the end of its timeline attached to the end of the slide timeline as well.

Delete that Click box. Set the Shape button to appear for the rest of the slide (CTRL-E or with the Timing properties) and set its pausing point to 1,5 or 2 secs (Timing Properties, because your pausing point is so close to the start that you cannot drag it with the mouse).

Thank you for your help and the detailed information. Yes, I read that article. This problem occured with and without the click box. The click box was a try to solve the problem. Now I deleted that click box and set the shape button to appear for the rest of the slide and set its pausing to 1,5 secs. That did not change the situation: as I click a several times on the slide (at a point where there is nothing) it moves to the next slide.

I added the variabel "cpInfoCurrentFrame": it counts till 30 and stops then. If I click on the slide it counts till 46 and if I click  once more the counter restarts and I get to the next slide. For me it seems that way:

1. pausing point after 30 frames because of the drag and drop-exercise.

2. unpausing by clicking

3. pausing point at 46 frames (1,5 seconds) because of the shape button

4. unpausing by clicking (which I want to avoid)

I tried two methods of "strict way of pausing":

"By choosing the command 'Pause' to be triggered On Enter for a slide" and

"By using the Success event an interactive object (like a shape button) with the command 'Pause'" -> done with the drag and drop.

Every time the same thing: steps 1-4... Clicking somewhere twice leads me to the next slide.

I built an empty page only with the shape buttons and it worked well. Is it possible that the problem has to do with the import from Power point?

;I didn't get it that you have a DaD on that slide as well. Is the D&D reporting or not? I have to see the actions triggered by that D&D.

Some pausing points are invisible on the timeline which is the case for the D&D pausing point.

TIP: open the Advanced Interaction panel (F9) to see all the actions triggered by events.

It happens on pages with only text too, but maybe it is better to continue talking about this slide (or not?).

D&Ds actions are success: "no action" and mistake: "no action" But I tried several actions as Pause for both. What do you mean with reporting? The D&D tells me if I did it right or wrong, but there is no information that will be reported for an evaluation or something. I don't know if this screenshot helps you

Looking at the advanced interaction panel I found one thing: smartshape_892, mistake: continue. Can this be the problem?

D&D can be used as Quiz slide, but that is not the case for you (In Quiz einbeziehen is not checked).

Can you check the exact version number? It should be 9.0.2/437.

I am a bit lost now. It is a pity that my license for CP9 just expired... or I would have asked to send me the project, or at least one slide.

Loojking closer to the Advanced Interaction panel: you shouldn't normall have a Last Attempt action if the shape button has Infinite attempts.

You told at the beginning that it was CP9, now you tell it is CP2017?

I never start from PPT... have no experience whatsoever with that (IMO bad) work flow. Are you sure there are no clicks scheduled, timed in the PPT?

I'm sorry, I thought that the version name is 'Captivate 9, Version 2017'. I decided to stop importing from power point and will rebuilt it now. It was not the first problem with the import. Thank you a lot for your time and help.

It is indeed confusing, this is version 10 with the old numbering, but is launched as CP2017. It is not a patch or dot release on 9.

I changed the version number in your original question.

Hi,

Did rebuilding it help? I am having the same issue with CP 2017. I'm in the process of trying to problem solve this. I did not start with an import. For the time being, since I have to deliver a draft of the project today i just extended the timeline of the slide so that the reviewers don't catch that it goes to the next slide while you are interacting with the objects on the screen. Even though I have my SmartShapes as buttons pausing the timeline about three seconds into the slide, when i publish the course and click away on the boxes, I can see my timeline moving forward each time I click on the interactive boxes (again, these are SmartShapes that are buttons and they are revealing information as the learner clicks on them). Here is a screenshot of my timeline:

You probably forgot to uncheck the option Continue Playing the Project for the shape buttons.

ContinuePlaying.png

It only will appear if the command is not a navigation command, and not Execute Advanced actions of Execute Shared actions.

You told me that the shape buttons did show something, the option would be there.

I gave you one link to an article about the Timeline, the whole sequence includes 5 articles.

Up till CP9 the option Continue.... was not available as I described in this older article. Are you perhaps on a version before 9.

Your first question mentioned that you use CP2017.

I do not see that option as I am executing advanced actions (that's how i'm displaying my info boxes). Here is my properties panel for one of the buttons. Perhaps there is a way to do this in the advanced actions?

That was not mentioned. An advanced action normally pauses the playhead without having to check any option.

Can I see that action please?

You didn't discover the Preview button yet? Nor grouping? Grouping would help a lot for the Hide actions.

Advanced Actions Dialog box in Captivate 2017 - Captivate blog

I see no reason why the playhead would be released with this advanced action.

Can you please insert the system variable cpInfoCurrentframe on the slide to check at which moment the frame number starts moving again? You have almost 20 interactive objects on that slide, the one triggering this advanced action will not be the cause of your problem, it must be one of the other interactive objects.

Ok i will try that - the reason I didn't group is because I need this to be 508-compliant and I can't enter Alt-text for grouped items. I didn't want to make them a graphic either because I thought the text might not look as crisp.

You can still have Alt text for the items in the group, would use groups to

simplify actions, maybe even shared actions could be possible.

As for crispness, I sometimes use SVG for text.
