How to go to jump to ``main menu`` in a quiz ?

Explorer ,
Jan 07, 2016 Jan 07, 2016

Hello,

Hopefully, you will be able to help me out with this.

My course begins with a menu. The learner has the option to either go through the course or take the quiz.

However, if the learner takes the quiz but decides to go back to the menu (for whatever reason), he can`t. He`s stuck in the quiz, unless I find a way to bring him back to the menu slide.

I wanted to add a Return to menu button on the quiz slides, but it doesn`t work. I also need the results to be reported back to my LMS.

I thought about using the survey - where I can actually add a Return to menu button - but the option of having feedback is not available.

Any ideas on how to achieve this?

I am using Captivate 8.

Many thanks,

Julie

Hi Julie,

You can use only one interactive object on quiz slides, which is the shape button. Have a look at my blog post:

Buttons on Question/Score Slides in Captivate 6? - Captivate blog

It was written for CP6 but still valid in CP8.

However you must be careful: if you jump out of the quiz scope, the Quiz attempt (on quiz level) will be considered to be over. Is that OK?

Hello Lilybiri!

Thank you for your prompt answer, it's greatly appreciated.

Currently,  the quiz slides have the quiz "Submit" button and my smart shape "Return to Menu" that is used as the button to go back to the menu.

However, when I answer the first question and click the "Submit" button, it provides feedback, which is okay. But, when I click anywhere on the screen to go to the next question, nothing happens. The "Return to Menu" button works fine.

I looked to see if my "Return to Menu" button paused too early, but that is not the case.

I don't quite understand how to make this work (obviously )..

Any suggestions?

Thank you!

Julie

Take the pause out of the shape button in the Timing panel.

Did you leave all the embedded objects on the quiz slide? Can you post a screenshot of the timeline of one slide (with stage), will try to repro in CP8.

This is working for me:

  • Created a shape button with the action 'Jump to menu'
  • In Timing panel set it to No Pause, and timed 'For the rest of the Project', always on Top checked. Be careful to put the shape button somewhere not overlapping with an embedded quiz object because those are always on top of the stack.

Everything works as expected.

Hello Lilybiri!

Thank you for the additional information.

However, my Return to Menu button won't let me "jump" to the menu slide.

I have my customized navigation buttons, but with an advanced action, they are hidden during the Quiz.

I have set the Return to Menu button for the rest of the project but couldn't find a way to place it on top. I'm in Quiz settings, not survey - would that be the reason?

Thank you,

Julie

Hi again,

I forgot to mention, that when I click on the Return to Menu button, not only does it not go to the Menu slide, but does take me to the next question....

Apparently something is wrongly setup, because I really double-checked in a Captivate 8 file.

Did you disable the buttons before hiding them? Did you take out the pausing for the Return to Menu button?

Always on top is in the Timing panel, it appears when you choose to display for Rest of Project. It doesn't matter if it is a quiz slide or not.

Hello Lilybiri!

I created an advanced actions to Disable and Hide the navigation buttons and have it On Enter.

I have removed the pause in my Return to Menu button and have checked the Place Object on Top box.

When I click on the Return to Menu button, it doesn't bring me back to the Menu page...

When I took the questions slides and created a new project (without the slides that had the Navigation buttons) it worked... So, I'm assuming it's related to my navigation buttons.

Any suggestions?

Many thanks,

Julie

In the last screenshot, the selected shape is a button (timeline should be green), right? But it looks like it is sitting on top of other buttons? I see an audio button under that same shape button, a play button, a return button, probably timed for the rest of the project on a previous slide? They may never be shown/enabled at the same time when sitting in the same location. Is that the case?  Can you show the On Enter action that you are using? Is it really necessary to have the Menu button in that same location? Specify how many buttons are there? They cannot be on the master slide because those buttons don't have an ID, cannot be controlled.

The Return To Menu button is referenced in green in the timeline.

I moved the Return to Menu button to another place on the screen, instead of being on top of the navigation buttons (even if they are disabled and hidden via an advanced interaction).

Yes, the navigation buttons are timed for the rest of the project on the previous slide. I have no buttons on the master slide (Quiz slide)advanced action.png.image2.png

The only idea that I still have is: do you have something that is preventing navigation? What is the Required option for the Quiz. Do you allow Backwards navigation in the Quiz Preferences? Do you have Branch aware checked? Do you have Pretest slides?

Hi Lilybiri,

Again, thank you for taking the time to help me out, it's greatly appreciated!

I'm assuming that I DO have something preventing navigation, but what?....   Required option for quiz is at Required - The use must take the quiz. No backward navigation and I have checked the Branch Aware box - tested it with and without being checked and it still isn't working... I have no pretest slide.

On the first slide, I have a menu. Either the user takes the course, or takes the quiz. I have removed the navigation buttons everywhere, and now, when I click on the Return to Menu button, it takes me to the next slide. I thought if I removed the navigation buttons, that it would work - because I tested the questions slides by copying/pasting them onto a new project - but that failed as well.

Is there a way to create a slide (not a quiz slide or survey slide) that I can get it to report back to my LMS? Maybe an advanced action?

Change the Required option back to Optional, that may be the culprit. There are other ways to force the user to take the quiz.

Definitely do NOT check the option Branch aware at all.

Sorry forgot to answer the other question. All interactive objects can be scored, but I don't think this is the issue, it must be the Quiz Required option.

Hello Lilybiri,

I have changed the Required option to Optional and unchecked the Branch Aware option.

I'm all out of options.... I've tested it left and right, and nothing works..

Could be that your project is getting corrupted. Can you try to create a new project with same resolution and copy/paste some slides. Just to try to see if it works then?

I already tried. I created a new responsive project and copied/pasted the quiz slides. It worked.

Then, I went back to my course, deleted the quiz questions, saved it under a new name and pasted the quiz slides. That did not work...

So we are sure it is not in the quiz slides. Try to add a few normal slides to the project where the quiz slides worked to check?

I deleted the quiz slides and replaced them with empty slides (not quiz slides, right?) and added the Return to Menu button, and it worked.

Can you add the system variable 'cpInQuizScope' in a text container on the first slide, time it for the rest of the project and always on top. It could be that jumping out of the Quiz scope is causing the problem? Add a button on the menu slide with a score of 1point, just to check if it is a scope problem.

I added the system variable on the first slide as a Text caption. Is that okay? I timed it for the rest of the project and on top. As per your instructions, I added a button on the menu slide (slide 1) with a score of 1 point. Should that button - when clicked - jump to the quiz question, or it doesn't matter if it doesn't jump to any slide?

In this scenario, when I'm on my quiz question, it doesn't bring me back to the Menu slide.

Now I'm out of ideas. There must be a wrong setting somewhere, because I double-checked the scenario that I described and it worked fine for me. It is not due to the quiz scope. Sorry!
