Recording of a simulation may be difficult if not impossible, depending on the UNIX Operating System (OS), the application and networking environment.

1) If you're on a Mac, since it is now based on a UNIX foundation, you may be able to access the app for recording via an X11 emulator, or some other tool. Check with your IT group and see if they support emulated access to the application via Mac or PC operating system.

2) Check if there are screen recording utilities that work under you UNIX os that can export to MP4 or FLV.

If not, you can convert what they can export, based on the WIN/MAC machine you'll use to produce the Captivate files. Adobe's eLearning suite included a tool called 'Media Encoder' that allowed conversion to FLV from a variety of formats. There are other commercial/freeware/open source tools, but which one you can use depends on your environment.

3) Use a video camera, but test the playback as there can be sync issues with old-school (tube) monitors, recording for LCD or Plasma display may have this issue too, recording from a projected display would likely be worst case. It won't give you a simulation, but you can use Captivate to build a menu system that the user interacts with, each click triggering a different video sequence.

From your system with Captivate installed, open a telnet widow to the Unix machine. Start the Captivate software sim capture on the telnet window. That is how I got my Linux capture.
