Hi all,
I'm building an eLearning and I have build an page that will function as a index page. Now my client asked me a few things and wanted to know if that is possible.
Lets say the eLearning will have 20 slides and the index page is slide 4. Now on every slide I will have a button that jumps you back to slide 4 (the index), but in a way people should be able to go back to the slide that they came from. SO if they jump from slide 20 to 4, they should be able to jump back to 20.I'm assuming I will have to work with actions like " j ump to previous page" but i'm not sure what would be the nicest way to do this without confusing the user.
My other question is this. On that index page you can show hide a few layers. You can view the structure of a cow, skin, skeleton etc. but every item will be discussed in the eLearning. So I made toggle switches to show hide the layers. Works perfect! next to the switches are the names of the items Skin, Skeleton etc. as text fields. Now skin will be discussed on slide 5 till 10 for ex ample and skeleton will be discussed in slide 11 till 15. Now the clients wants these text fields to link to those slides (no problem) but when you come back to the index (with the back to index button as mentioned above) He wants the text to have a different color, so that the user knows which subject He/She already checked. Is this possible to build?
Any tips or help is more than welcome!
Not so complicated , you just have to set up the custom navigation. There are some tips:

Which version are you using? This is important, because I would recommend to use multistates for the Text fields. Create a second custom state for them with the different color., will label that state as 'Visited' Use the Back button on each part to launch a shared or advanced action that will have two commands:
Change state of TextX to Visited
Jump to IndexSlide
For your first question, you'll have to use teh command 'Go to the Slide Last Visited'. Be careful not to get the learner in a loop. Avoid confusing by a clear label on the button. Personally I would prefer offering the TOC with the option "Enable Navigation" enabled, and perhaps 'Navigate Visited Slides Only". It would require an understandable labeling of all slides and grouping/part.

I'm using the latest version of Adobe Captivate.

In that case, my proposal for a solution is totally valid.

Thanks! I was also thinking about something like this. The client is creating a pretty difficult structure I must say.
Here is the thing structure he wants:
Cover
Index page (hyperlinks to chapters 1 till 4, when chapter 1 is done, chapter 2 becomes available etc etc)
Chapter 1
Part 1 (2 slides, when finished, jump to slide Chapter 1)
Part 2 (2 slides, when finished, jump to slide Chapter 1)
Part 3 (2 slides, when finished, jump to slide Chapter 1)
Part 4 (2 slides, when finished, jump to slide Index)
Chapter 2 (Same structure as chapter 1)
Chapter 3 (Same structure as chapter 1)
Chapter 4 (Same structure as chapter 1)
Exam (will become active when all chapters have been done)
Is is not better to have the TOC open and make use of this to show the user what He/She did or didn't do yet? And in a way have the exam questions still disabled till alle slides have been finished?

And after every part, the second slide in that part is a question. The user should get 3 attempts to do this. Now I have the first question done as a custom drag and drop. It was showing me a feedback after submitting, but it doesn't show it to me any more.
The wishes from the client for these questions types are:
- 3 attempts
- Can the user see what He/She did wrong after 3 attempts? (specially with a drag and drop, not sure how to do this) I told him this can be done with a review at the end. But He wants the user to see it immediately after 3 attempts. The review is only for the exam questions.

As for the other question about D&D. you'll need to use the object actions to track the attempts. Review will never show the correct answer for a D&D slide. You'll have to explain this in some way after the last attempt. Have a look at this blog post:

So I don't show the next and previous buttons in the menu bar, but create them myself and give specific action, if I'm correct?
I will than only show the play and mute function in the bottom with the standard playbar. Otherwise I will have to make them custom also. So sound and play/pause will be done with the normal playbar and next and previous will be controlled with custom buttons.
Just in case this will not work (it will, but maybe the time we have for this project will not allow me) is it possible to have the toc open and make sure all slides are checked before entering the exam?
The client keeps adding wishes, He now wants this to run in Moodle. Not problem at all, but are these feature going to have conflict with Moodle or are their any other things I need to be aware of when developing in Captivate and running the eLearning in Moodle?

I certainly would get rid of the playbar totally. Especially the progress bar ca be a problem, since it allows the user to scrub that bar to navigate anywhere It is pretty simple to set up a toggle Mute and Play/Payse button as well.
WIth that custom setup, you can hide the exam slide in the TOC, so that navigation to those slides is totally impossible. They will just be able to reach them using the custom navigation buttons, which you control completely

Thanks for the information. I created custom play/pause buttons before but I had push it twice for it to become active. But I mentioned this already in a different post and think their was a solution for it. The things that we use loads of video in the eLearning. So the video's are part of the design, we have a veterinarian walking in to screen and telling a story. So the mute and pause/play button are very important. But I will have look and my previous posts, to see the solutions.
I did however have a problem with the video's playing in Safari. Not sure if I posted this question already, but the video's don't play. This would be the last thing to fix in order to finalize this eLearning.

Personally I never use Safari, not even on my iPad. I have read some posts concerning that problem, should be solved by changing a setting in Safari that allows autoplay.

Hi Lilybiri,
I think we will advice to open the eLearning in Chrome.
About the slide structure this is what I'm going to do. Please let me know if I'm correct.
I will completely hide the forward and backward options in the playbar.
01) Index slide (contains 4 chapter buttons that take you to the chapters and has 4 objects states that contain a checkmark and a hidden exam button)
02) Chapter 1 overview page (next button, takes you to 03)
03) Chapter 1A (next button, takes you to 04)
04) Chapter 1B (next button, takes you to 05)
05) Chapter 1C (next button, takes you to 06)
06) Chapter 1D (next button, takes you to 01, activated button for chapter 2 and switches the objects states checkmark for chapter 1 to being checked)
07) Chapter 2 overview page (next button, takes you to 08)
08) Chapter 2A (next button, takes you to 09)
09) Chapter 2B (next button, takes you to 10)
10) Chapter 2C (next button, takes you to 11)
11) Chapter 2D (next button, takes you to 01, activates button for chapter 3 and switches the objects states checkmark for chapter 2 to being checked)
12) Chapter 3 overview page (next button, takes you to 13)
13) Chapter 3A (next button, takes you to 14)
14) Chapter 3B (next button, takes you to 15)
15) Chapter 3C (next button, takes you to 16)
16) Chapter 3D (next button, takes you to 01, activated button for chapter 4 and switches the objects states checkmark for chapter 3 to being checked)
17) Chapter 4 overview page (next button, takes you to 18)
18) Chapter 4A (next button, takes you to 19)
19) Chapter 4B (next button, takes you to 20)
20) Chapter 4C (next button, takes you to 21)
21) Chapter 4D (next button, takes you to 01, activated exam button and switches the objects states checkmark for chapter 4 to being checked)

Hi Lilybiri,
I created the structure. Made a forward button and for the chapter end screens I created a action.
The action jumps back to the index and hides the previous action button, shows a images with a checkmark and shows the next chapter button. The other chapters are still hidden. At the end of every chapter the action will show the next chapter button on the index slide.
My only question now is: when I refresh my browser, the index slide also switches back to its original start. Is there a way to avoid this? I'm afraid that a user might refresh the browser by accident.
I also like to know if I made the index screen correct. Every chapter now has:
- Chapter button
- Image in the same shape as the chapter button
- Image in the same shape as the chapter button with checkmark
The button and checkmark image are hidden for the none active chapters. When coming back to the index from a finished chapter. The button for that chapter gets hidden and the next chapter button gets show and the finished chapter button gets shown the checkmark image. I tried with button states and disable actions, but the button fro the finished chapters were still clickable. When finished the user should not be able to enter that chapter anymore.

Not totally what I had suggested, because I would have used states for the shape button instead of having three items for each button.
Refreshing the browser means that the course is restarting. If you want to keep the status, you would need to use Local Storage and Javascript. The whole setup would have to be changed, because you would need variables to store in LS.

Hi Lilybiri,
Totally get it now with the states. That will do the same trick but will keep the timeline much more clean. Thanks! will change it.
About the refreshing, I will make a note in the instructions screen to not refresh the browser.
Thanks again for your help!!
