I received a message to clear the cache in Captivate when I opened it this morning. I cleared the cache and when I tried to open a project I have been working at for more than a week, I get a message that it is not possible to open it. Is it lost because I cleared the cache? Can I retreive the project somehow? It's more than a week of fulltime work on that project. Can somebody please help me?

This look like something is wrong with the setup. Normally the cache is in a totally different folder from the projects themselves. Can you check the paths for both in the Preferences, General settings:
I am afraid that you have the projects in exact the same location as the cache, deleting the complete cache folder (not using the AIR application) will have cleared the whole folder. Moreover if you checked the option for Backup (see third check box in screenshot), those backup files are in the same folder as the normal project files.
Maybe with an application that can retrieve deleted files, but I'm afraid it is not possible from Captivate itself. Please check those preferences, to avoid that kind of issues in the future.

Thank you for your quick reply!
I am not saving the projects in the same location. This is what it looks like in Captivate but I never save my projects there. They are saved on my H: drive.

Is that H-drive a networked drive? That is a very bad idea, may be the cause of your problems now, maybe he is saving the cache files there as well. You have to change those paths, and never use a networked drive for CP-files. To avoid problems: copy the CP-file to a folder on your system (and set it up in the Preferences, also a separate folder for the cache files), and when you have finished working, you can copy them to a networked drive.

I have been saving all my projects on the H drive since I started working with Captivate, 2 years ago, and I have never had such a problem. I saved it before closing it down on Friday afternoon, but when i look at the file it is a very small file, so it seems as if it hasn't been saved at all for a long time, and since I haven't closed down my computer during the whole week and thus not closed Captivate or the project I was working on i didn't relaise it wasn't saving it at all. The strange thing is that every time I saved the project, the "Save" button became grey, which means that the project is saved. It makes me very worried that it is not possible to trust Captivate that it is actually saving the projects.
Thank you for your reply once again!

Lilli, you didn't answer my question: is this a networked drive? If you didn't have problems in the past, you just were very lucky compared to other users. I never had any problems with Captivate not saving, but I'm always working on projects locally, and I run Captivate as Administrator (something I didn't ask you about). A Captivate file is in reality a zipped folder with many files. That structure is normally visible in the cache folder.

Sorry, yes it is a networked drive. And I don't think I run Captivate as Administrator don't know how that works actually )...

Right-click on the Launch icon of Captivate, choose Run as Administrator (you'll have to contact IT maybe, to get the rights for Captivate only).
Or in the same menu, click Advanced button, you can set it to run always as administrator.

Thank you!
So there is no way in retreiving the project which I cannot open then?!

Since I have no idea where you did store your projects, you did override the normal Preferences without editing the paths there, I can just tell that I'm afraid that the project and cache files were stored in the same folder. I asked if you did check the Backup option, but didn't get an answer on that question.

The backup was not ticked, unfortunately. I cannot see the location for the backup now that I did select it.
I stored my project on the H drive which is a network drive.

Yes, but you did not change the paths in the Preferences.

No, I did not do that!

Did you check the path for the cache indicated in Preferences if it exists?

Yes I did...it exists..

It is empty at this moment probably? Try a new small project, edit the Preferences (although you are looking for problems if you work on a networked drive) to the correct paths and check if there is a folder appearing both in the projects folder and in the cache folder.

There is a folder appearing in the cache folder, but no folder in the projects folder, only the project itself which I saved there. I don't udnerstand what other kidn of folder should appear in the Projects folder?

That folder in the cache folder is the 'expanded' zip folder in cache, it shows all the files that are normally included in the cptx project (which is also a zipped folder).
