Hi everyone,
I am extremely worried as the files I am publishing (with and without SCORM wrapper) and file size are larger than the size we get when we ask another partner firm to publish our saves for testing.
Maybe their published file size of our project is 33 MB and ours 54 MB. It is the same save and everyone is on the latest patch,
I even reinstalled the whole suite yesterday to test but it is still the same.
The load time on this project over an LMS are atrocious. But they are buttery smooth when using the smaller one zip file we got externally.
So what should I do?
Thanks a lot!
Nik

Have you compared your settings with theirs under Preferences > Project Size and Quality?
Perhaps you're not using the same compression settings.

Hello Rod,
they are using our save so it should be exactly the same?

I just talked to Adobe Support in Germany and even they cannot tell me whether the publish settings are tied to a project or not.
Quiz settings are tied so I cannot see why compression etc. wouldn´t.

Why make assumptions? What extra information do you glean from NOT looking into this?
Just get them to send you screenshots of their Preferences > Project Size and Quality dialog so that you can clearly see which settings they have when they open your project on THEIR Captivate apps. If it doesn't match what you see in the same dialog section, then you will have some idea about why there is this disparity.
Also, I'm sure this is NOT the case, but I have to ask whether you are perhaps publishing to HTML5 and maybe they are publishing to SWF but because it's all wrapped up inside a SCORM zip you haven't discovered that difference. Is that possible?

Thanks for your help.
Actually I did not assume too much here.
I did get our partners to send me screenshots of the settings (exactly the same as expected). The only difference I see is that they use a Mac.
Also Adobe could not tell me what is what (tied to project or not) and referred me to the forums.
So I still don´t know how to fix it. Clearing the cache etc. has all been tried...
So I am in trouble.

Ok. I have another idea you can try. It's a long shot, so don't get your hopes up, but if it works it would mean that the Windows Captivate output has a bug that the MAC output does not have (for a change).
Take a copy of your project and go through the Library deleting anything and everything that has a zero usage count. Then save the project, close it down, and start it up again (so that the deleted items are not retained anywhere in the background) and then try publishing again.
Does it the output get any smaller? If it does, it would mean that some of the items that are NOT needed in the output are being included anyway.

Will try that again.
Let's see what it does!
Thanks everyone.

Okay, no change there at all.

The thing is, there are no 2 CPTX files. They just open ours, publish it and their resulting file is smaller.
I can look at the two files/directories that are published though. That is a good idea. Will do that and report back.

I'm curious, is there any chance you have output this project to an exe file on windows, then published to SWF and HTML?
I'm wondering if that would trigger some libraries being included in the project file that wouldn't be available on the Mac.

You may want to use a file comparison tool on the published files.
I'd look at the CPTX files from each user, Mac and Windows, buy changing the CPTx to ZIp, decompressing, and comparing the folders.
Then, I would take the same approach to the published files, and try to find a reason for the discrepancy.

Results are in!
The folder "DR" is bigger as it has more JSON files than the other one.
a. There are more files.
b. The ones that are the same are bigger in size.
In short, what the ..*?
By the way, what does JSON do? And why is it different in my version and their version stemming from the same cptx?

Are you sure they use exact the same version? JSON were added in a recent version.

Hi Lilibiri,
I reinstalled CP 9 with all the patches yesterday to be on safe side.
The consultant we sometimes ask (it is Damien; I guess you know him...) uses a Mac and I am confident is on the latest patch too.
When we open our cptx and publish it, the DR folder is the one to the right.
When he opens the exact same file and publishes it with the same settings it is the one on the left.
So I don´t get it. Ours is much bigger and has additional JSONs.

Hmm..a question and a thought?
If they are publishing from a MAC does it publish SWF as well as the HTML5 version? If it doesn't that would account for the file size difference and perhaps your LMS is loading your SWF version (which has issues) while the LMS is loading the HTML5 version from your buddy, which works fine.
Maybe two problems, not just one. If so easy fix, just output to HTML5 as well.
Just a thought...maybe totally out to lunch : )
Cheers,
Steve

@Stevepixel Rod already asked about that, but it has become such a long thread.
The difference seems to be in the dr subfolder: the Mac is producing on 10 JSON files for images, but the PC version has 23. I have no idea what the cause is.
Would like to know how many images are in the Library?

Hi, there are 192 images and they are all used.

Out of ideas about the origin of those different folders. Did you try to find someone else with a PC to publish? Can you check with Damien if he is on 9.0.Z.437?

Hi, I am 99% sure as he wrote books on how to use CP so it would be very out of character for him to not update.
I will buy a laptop though and test.
Other than that I have no way forward.

Even I sometimes have to wait to upgrade for several reasons. That has
nothing to do with writing...the first 9.0.2 had a bug, if one is busy with
a project better to wait.

Hmm, to clarify, the first patch was buggy and rather than speedings things up. It slowed things down?
That is not good. How could I revert? We are in big trouble because of this. Thanks a lot!

No, the second 9.0.2 fixed the bugs. I did install it but since I have several systems, keep the 9.0.1 on another system in case of...
