Hello,
I am having problems setting up a 'course' and wonder whether anyone might have a solution. (I'm using Cap9.) Here's what I'd like to do.
1. The course uses Knowledge Check questions, but no Quiz Questions. (No final result is given.) This course is a tutorial, i.e. it is designed to impart knowledge.
2. There is interactive branching, which is effected by the choices made in the Kn. Check questions.
3. Because of this branching, participants have to be locked into specific routes within the course. (That is, they aren't free to go to just any slide. There is no play bar. There is a TOC--but with restrictions: see below.)
4. The course will run on an LMS. It will go in a Scorm package since there has to be reporting (of the completion of the course only; as mentioned, there are no quiz results).
5. Resume is (and has to be) activated. The course is too long to expect participants to finish it in one sitting.
6. When the participant has finished the course/tutorial, I want him or her to be able to use it for reference material. This means that, once the participant has finished the course, he or she has to be allowed a degree of freedom to go through the course that was not available the first time around (as mentioned in Point 3 above).
I hope that this is clear enough. Now, I was actually able to accomplish this (almost). I set up the TOC, but had it locked at Slide 1. And on the final slide, it became unlocked. Thus, when the participant reached the final slide (which is only possible if one has completed the course), the TOC became available and became a way of accessing the individual parts of the course for reference purposes.
Sounds pretty good. But . . .
As mentioned, Resume has to be activated. Moreover, the TOC is locked upon entering Slide 1. However, when the course resumes, the TOC is unlocked. This appears to be simply the way Captivate works. And this throws a spanner in the works since the condition set forth in Point 3 above is no longer fulfilled. With the TOC unlocked, participants are free to roam through the course at will.
I've been able to come up with a work-around, but . . . it's a long way around. It involves putting an on-enter advanced action on every slide, and even throwing in a few blank slides to trigger some of the advanced actions. It works. But I don't like it.
Does anyone see a better way? Thank you.
Best regards,
Marvin DuBois
