MathMagic not working

I choose Insert > Equation. Sure enough a sample equation appears on my slide. However, MathMagic  does not launch. If I double-click on the sample equation, MathMagic still doesn't launch.

If I launch the executable file for MathMagic, then MathMagic does open. But after a few seconds, a message appears stating that MathMagic has stopped working:

Does anyone know how to make MathMagic work properly?

I've also seen this bug.  I haven't been able to get the Equation Editor to work reliably either.  Not a great feature in my opinion.
