Naming text hyperlinks for accessibility purposes

Participant ,

Hello!  I have a text caption, with a few words in that text acting as a hyperlink that hides that text caption.  Is there any way to give that hyperlink a unique name so that the screen reader can read it properly?  Currently, if I look at tab order list, that link's name is a string of digits, and i cannot find where I could rename it.

Thank you!

AFAIK it is not possible to name hyperlinks. Maybe you have to use a click box instead, which can be named? The result will be the same for the user.

Thank you!  As far as click boxes - from what I understand those are not selectable using keyboard (by pressing TAB), and invisible buttons should be used instead.  Am I correct in this, or am I not using click boxes correctly?

Can you try adding Accessibility text for it and see? I hope I have understood your use case correctly. 🙂

Thanks,

Mohana

Thank you for replying!  The link is part of a larger body of text (I selected several words and made them into a hyperlink).  Adding accessibility text would add it to the whole block of text, not just the link, no?

I guess a safe workaround would be to not use hyperlinks and instead create an invisible button over the section of a text that I need, but I was wondering if there's a way to work directly with hyperlinks.

Thanks again!

Another workaround you could try is separating the hyperlinked text into an individual text caption.

Thanks,

Mohana

Hi Mohana,

The OP didn't specify exactly what the hyperlink was meant to do. One of its advantages is that it can trigger several commands, while being part of a global text. A feature that is missed by many users, if you hear the reactions to my latest blog posts about using hyperlinks for their 'events'. If you put them in a separate text container you lose that advantage.
