only recording desktop, not the application

I have been trying to record graphics benchmark tests, all the time it always only record the desktop window

and not the game/application that starts up full window. The red box stays on the desktop, it doesn't seem to matter which settings I choose - screen area or application, it always does the same as with application window region-  it records the app game launcher as on the desktop but when the game app starts, the focus is still on the desktop.

How do I record this- an app or game in full screen?

Hi there

I'm not only a Captivate user but also a Camtasia Studio user. As such, I participate in both Adobe as well as TechSmith forums.

I can tell you that over in the Camtasia forums it's a common and regular question as to why Camtasia seems unable to record games that insist on this odd full screen mode.

Unfortunately I don't believe I ever saw a solution or workaround for it. Maybe try using the application called FRAPS?

FRAPS game capture video recorder fps viewer

maybe I am just doing something wrong. I have already tried fraps which didnt work at all, seems to be outdated and abandoned which is why I got started with this, and I have succesfully recorded videos from desktop but for full screen such as recording games I can not.. any help appreciated.

It seems for some software you haveto have it in a window, but I have found playing ff14 even in a window, it makes the controls of the game go all unplayable so clicks dont work etc

Try pressing the prntscrn (printscreen) key on your keyboard. Does that force a capture?

if not, it's probably due to the way the application is drawing the window. Captivate hooks into Windows API. The application is probably drawing direct to screen using the video card buffer, or something like that, which Captivate can't 'see'.

How about using Windows Snipping Tool? If you can get individual screenshots, you can paste those into Captivate as a series, then add the cursor, highlights, etc...

thanks for the info and yes I can say you are right from my expereince, if it goes full screen then it just records the window behind - and that is really a let down got to say.

I have managed to make it record gameplay of ff14 if I window the game so I can still see my start menu, however the controls of the game dont work properly and it runs a lt more laggy - as if the system cant handle the load of both being open. I just upgraded to i3 desktop with 16gb ram and an ssd and I have gtx550ti - which is a decent mid card. Perhpas this is just not suitable or meant for recording games. I have recently been trying one that popped up out of nowhere from xbox/microsoft and that will record full screen gaming although it didnt work without glitch and only recorded about 30 sec so far..still trying.
