I am working on a CP9 project that was already designed before I started working on it. I am having problems with the buttons and navigation. How can I change what the place holder buttons do? I've tried adding my own buttons to the master slide but then I am unable to delete the placeholder buttons on the master slide. Also on a few of the courses I am working on I get a error message stating 'unable to apply new theme.' I need help! Does anyone have any advice?

If you are talking about the buttons on Quiz Master Slides, I would suggest you just use the buttons provided. These buttons are not ordinary buttons but are special objects that MUST be used for those specific functions on quiz slides.

Yes I am talking about the default quiz buttons. The next button at the moment needs double clicked to continue. Is there a way to change that? I do not have submit all check in the quiz preferences. Does that make any difference? Would checking this make the submit button useless? And one more question. On Knowledge check slides can the clear button clear the answer even after the student hits the submit button? We would prefer for the student to be able to do this on the knowledge check slides.

You are on CP9? This is probably an upgraded project? Because CP9 doesn't have a Next button, it has a Skip button during quiz, and during Review there are new Back/Next buttons that are not available during quiz.
The Submit button is the most important embedded object on the Quiz slides. It is the button that triggers the two-step Submit process. Do never delete that button!

Yes I'm using CP9. We are updating our courses. So what your are saying is don't use the Skip button on the knowledge check courses and just let them use the review buttons? What about quiz buttons? Is there a way to have the student just simple click next once after submitting their answer? At the moment it requires a double click.

Please, can you specify about which slides you are talking because I see new information:
I must have explained badly, because I never wrote to use the Review buttons instead of the Skip button. You were speaking about a Next button, but there is no Next button on regular Question slides, there is a Submit button, a Skip button (if you don't uncheck it), a Clear button (if you don't uncheck it) and a Back button (if you allow Backwards navigation which I would never recommend). The Review buttons only show up during Review. That was a problem in former versions because the Next button (which existed then) had a double functionality which could lead to confusion:
Never use the Skip button to submit an answer, never delete the Submit button. If you want you can change its label to Next (which is not very clear to me, but may be to you).

I'm having trouble with both question and Knowledge check. Would you suggest just removing the skip button all together? The student must answer before continuing. Also is there a way for the clear button to work on the Knowledge check slides after the student has already submitted their answer? I appreciate the link. Thanks!

Uncheck Skip button in Quiz Properties panel if you don't want to allow skipping questions, yes.
Clear only works on question/knowledge check slides before Submitting.

I'm encountering the same problems. I fixed the double click by making the Actions on each KC page "go the the net slide". that includs failure message "last attempt." i set to "go to next slide"
the problem i am having is controlling navigation on KC slides. i want user to click a next button. click randomly on the page or pressing "y" is undesirable and does not fit course navigation design. I gather i need to rename "skip" to "next". why on earth it reads "skip". the KC is not meant to be skipped! Strange.

I would recommend you learn first to use Captivate as it is designed. I explained in the blog post about Question slides how to use a one-step approach for Submit, but that means creating custom objects and advanced actions.
Apparently you changed the setup totally for KC slides, because the Skip button is unchecked by default. I explained the meaning of Skip in the other thread where you posted same rant.
