I started a simple project; one slide with a bit of text and 32 image buttons with some custom states. When I try to Preview all I see is this flickering popup:
When I preview HTML5 in browser I do see the slide with all its content. But if I view the published content, I again only see a blank slide. Has anyone encountered this and knows of a solution?
I tried creating a new project and paste the objects, without success. And I deleted groups of buttons. Turns out that having more than 12 buttons cause the issue described above.

Do you mean you have more than 12 buttons on a single slide, or just more than 12 buttons in the entire project?

Yes, all buttons sit on one slide.

Just for the heck of it, I created a new project and used smartshapes as buttons and added some custom states and small images; the same things happens.

If this is a normal project, not a responsive and you want to publish to HTML5, the only preview option that will approxiamtely show HTML5 output is F11 (Preview HTML in Browser). After publishing you need to upload the content to a webserver for testing, did you do that?

If I ever get to that point I will publish the content and upload it to a server. For now I 'd like to figure out why the Preview doesn't work.

Which Preview? Is it a normal or a responsive project?

It's a normal project. I mean the Preview you get with F8 or F10.

I tried to explain, but apparently not clear enough, that all Preview methods for normal projects are Flash-based, with the exception of F11 (HTML in Browser) and in SCORM Cloud. If your foucus is on HTML output do trust only F11.

I know all of that, but it doesn't explain why a project with a certain number of buttons would not preview correctly. In any case, this is yet another project I had planned to create in CP, but now have to switch back to Storyline.

You told that everything worked with F11. It doesn't work with Flash based output, which means something is wrong with the setup of Flash on your system. Are you working with the default paths for files and cache, which are added automatically to Flash trusted locations? Do you have Flash player installed and activated in the browser you are using?

I seem to remember there IS currently an issue in Captivate that limits the number of buttons you are allowed to place on one slide.
I thought that issue was connected with having more than a certain number of buttons on a Master Slide, but you may have discovered that a similar limitation exists on normal slides.
In any case, I would suggest you log the issue as a bug with Adobe. They've been promising a dot.point update for Captivate 2017 since last April, so it can't be too far away by now...

The issue Rod is referring two was about the number of shape buttons on master slides (not more than 3). I may have missed it, but didn't see simiar issues reported for normal slides. However, I would seriously reflect if such a big number of buttons is user-friendly, excpet of course for a game. I a puzzled by the fact that the slide appears correctly with F11, but not with th Flash-based previews, hence I had focus on the differences between HTML5 and SWF.

With the latest update 10.0.1.285, this issue is now fixed. I can now add any number of buttons to a slide.
