Publish video for school project

New Here ,
Jun 25, 2023 Jun 25, 2023

Using Captivate to create a project for school. I just downloaded the free trial and did the project. I am trying to publish it but having some issues. I have buttons in the project, so you stop at points and have to click the button to move on. I have done this because there are videos within the project that I want to make sure people can watch and rewatch before moving on.

However, when I publish it to video, the buttons do not work. It just runs as a none interactive video. When I do it as an executable, the file says I don't have admin rights to run the video. So basically, I need to know how to publish this project so my buttons work and it's a file I can give to my professor.

Thanks.

If you publish to MP4 video this is NOT an interactive format.  That's why your buttons will not work.

The EXE format is a self-running Flash/SWF file and Flash is no longer supported on any platform?  The option to publish to EXE format should have been removed from the current version of Captivate but for some reason was left in there, even though the chances of anyone being able to use the output is very remote.  (Not your fault.)

If you want to publish your output so that it remains interactive, then you need to publish as HTML5.  Then if you want people (other than yourelf) to view the content, you need to either upload the HTML5 output to a web server or else publish as a SCORM package and upload to a Learning Management System (LMS).  Does your school have an LMS?

Not an LMS that I can use. I just set up a SCORM cloud, but I must figure out what to do from here.

Thanks

I will not repeat the excellent information provided by @RodWard , just want to give a couple of tips.

You talk about 'buttons' on a video, why didn't you use the features for an interactive video: bookmarks and overlay slides? Did you test the project extensively in multiple browsers with F11 (Preview HTML in Browser)?

You also have to know that the published output, since it is with a trial version, has a limited timeframe. It will be disabled 30 days after publishing. Is your professor aware of that? As a former professor, a task which cannot be saved for a couple of years could lead to scoring discussions.

Whether you need to upload to a webserver or a LMS depends on way you set up the project. If you did enable Reporting under Quiz Preferences, you cannot upload to a simple webserver but need to use a LMS. You seem to have gotten very little information about that from your school.

For uploading to a webserver there is a free solution. Since you downloaded a trial version you have an Adobe ID. With that ID you can log in to the eLearning community (even from within Captivate). It is possible to upload a HTML output folder, zipped by Captivate (is in the Publishing dialog box) to that community. You only need to provide the link to that upload to your professor, but it will be publicly available to everyone. The limitation to 30 days after publishing before expiration remains however. To upload a SCO (where Reporting is enabled), if not possible to the school LMS, you can use SCORM Cloud.

Thank you. I do have a follow-up question. I did disable reporting (and will double-check that); how do I publish to a SCROM CLOUD? I did set myself up with a free one. Any advice would be great.

I don't want this for public viewing since it is a school assignment.

I understand the 30-day limitations, and that is fine for now. It is due in a few days. And yes, our school tells us these are software you can use, but that is it. I tried a few others and didn't like them. So I figure I will try Captivate. It was all working fine until I needed to publish it. Since it is due in 2 days, I have to work and don't have time to figure out something else.

Thank you so much for your help.

If you want to upload the course to SCORM Cloud then you will need to enable Reporting in the Quiz settings and select SCORM as the reporting standard.  The published output cannot be more than 100 megabytes if you are using the free account on SCORM Cloud.   Other than publishing out the SCORM as a ZIP format, that's all you should need to do.  Uploading the ZIP file to SCORM Cloud is very easy.  If you know the email address of other people you want to show the content, you can easily invite them to view it in SCORM Cloud.

When I do it to a SCORM cloud, will it give me a link or another way to submit it? We have to submit something to Dropbox for grading.

Thanks !!

You won't be able to use DropBox.  SCORM Cloud allows you to share the content by supplying the email address of the person you want to view the content.  That email contains a link that will only work for them.

You don't need a LMS when you disabled reporting, because you are not publishing a SCO output.

Please try my suggestion of uploading to the Learning Community. If your professor is not providing a solution for this problem, I don't think you should mind the fact that it is public. I even wonder whether he/she realizes that only an URL can be visited to view the output. Are you sure you don't have to provide the raw cptx-project? Beware: a cptx project is a zipped folder, you cannot just send it by mail.

Another free solution can be found using the AWS server (it is that one which is also used in the eLearning community). Or you can set up a webserver on your system. If I was the professor, I would have provided a webserver to my students.

Thanks again.

My professor is OK with just a URL. My program is for Instructional Design, so they don't tell us what software to use, but in other courses, I used some others like Canva and had an issue that I didn't want to tell with on this assignment. So most keep it simple, but I am always the person going beyond because I have a BS in Digital Media Arts and have used FCP and Premier Pro in the past.

I did find some videos about publishing to a SCORM cloud, so I'll play with it today and see what happens.

Thank you so much for all your help !!

So it looks like I will have to upload it to the eLearning Community. Now time to figure out how.

Create an account (based on your Adobe ID).

Click the blue button 'Post here' in the top, right part.

Look at this screenshot:

PostProject.png

Choose the type of post (blue highlight), click 'Add Captivate project (zip) (red highlight. As mentioned before, you need to let Captivate zip it (it is an option in the Publish dialog box). Wait until it is loaded, and you can than insert it. I find it appropriate to add a short comment. You can find tons of examples in my profile (I am Lieve Weymeis there).

You will have to wait for approval by the moderator, which can take a couple of days. It will appear under the Blogs.

I am not sure it will be moderated tomorrow, it is not very regularly.

If necessary, send me a private message and provide me with the output folder (not zipped). I am prepared to upload to my domain temporarily to help you out until the moderated version is published. I am a moderator in this forum, but have no rights whatsoever in the eLearning community.
