SCORM taking to play on LMS

Hello,

I have a SCORM file that is 24.86 MB in size. I have almost eight videos, as well as a quiz that contains eight pools in it.

The SCORM when it starts playing takes almost 60 seconds to load. I am concerned about this because my LMS developer tells me that the quiz and other captivate elements load first, while the data we design loads later. My clients say the time it takes to set up SCORM is unbearable. Please let me know if there is a solution that plays SCORM smoothly.

You need to test first to find out if your main issue is the videos.  25 megabytes is not really a very large SCORM package, so there must be something else going on here.

Take a copy of the project and try removing all of the videos or links to videos and then republish as a SCORM zip.  What size does that end up?  Try uploading that to your client's LMS and see how long it takes to load and play.

If the loading time significantly improves then you know where the problem is.

Like Rod I wonder about the file size you mention. I hope you are aware of the fact that it is possible to let Captivate estimate the output file size using the Project Info panel.

Is the first slide of the project a video slide? I suppose you embedded the video, did you try to stream them (from YT or another server)?

That big file size is due to the videos being embedded. Each of them need to be loaded when entering the slide where they are embedded, and that will take time.

Don't embed the videos.  Stream them instead.  That's the only option if the initial download is too long.  You say your client doesn't want that option but they cannot have it both ways.

As I already suggested: stream them instead of embedding. It will be the only way to make the experience smoother.

That is not a question which can be answered by a simple number because it depends on too much parameters. The problem you have is due to the multiple videos, where each video needs to be loaded On Enter for its slide. Same happens with large audio files on slides.  The size of the project depends on a lot of parameters as well. You'll find multiple threads in this forum about reducing project sizes.

The answer to your question depends on three things:

  • The size (in megabytes) of your SCORM package.
  • The bandwidth (in megabits per second) available to your end users.
  • The server latency of your LMS.

If you can answer those two questions, it should be possible to calculate at what point (give or take a few seconds) when your SCORM content would begin to play for each end user.    The biggest variable is likely to be the end user bandwidth.
